Genuinely curious because the latter isn't going to happen unless we are months/years into this thing and we are on the verge of the end of mankind.

I am pretty sure you will still be able to get groceries for the foreseeable future.

They're panic buying because they're buying into the media overhyping this thing.

I think people are scared of mandatory shutdown where you can’t leave your house for 2 weeks.

No. People are buying in bulk for the fear of a potential future quarantine

This is the reason I haven't trapped or shot the abundant squirrels around my house over the past couple years.
I also have a groundhog who may not be long for this world.
I may catch an entirely different virus, but at least I won't starve.

Even on the rare chance that happens there will still be a means to get food. They aren't going to shut people in and say now starve to death.

Hat tip to David Ricky for this.

I think a lot of us are like this where we think it's hysteria, but for real could be a 2-4 week lockdown. So, we want to play it cool, but have something to eat and low key buy supplies just in case.

I genuinely had to go to the store anyway, but having seen the shelves so empty I picked up some bulk basic crap like rice and canned beans in The event the craze continues for long.

It’s not like I won’t eat it anyway

Most people panic buying don't know what "supply chain" is.

So I'll go with quarantine fears.

I don’t know, but I do know in Southeast Louisiana that my family, friends and neighbors will most likely be ok.

I had the wife buy some extra formula for the newborn, but that's it.

I definitely dont understand the toilet paper panic. Even if you are out, I assume the shower still works...
