Are paper receipts obsolete?

Other than business expenses or reimbursement purposes, what is the point of a venue or merchant providing a paper receipt? I was thinking this yesterday after I got my haircut (inb4 New Iberia). The place gave me a copy of my paper receipt without asking if I needed it. I just immediately crumpled it up and threw it away.
Will our society completely move to E-receipts in the near future, or will paper receipts still be used? I don't see a need to maintain a printer and supply receipt paper. Maybe it's just the millennial in me talking.

It would be nice if you would automatically be emailed your receipt to the email associated with your card.

The IRS is heavily in favor of keeping paper receipts around.

I bought a doughnut and they gave me a receipt for the doughnut; I don't need a receipt for the doughnut.
I'll just give you the money, and you give me the doughnut, end of transaction. We don't need to bring ink and paper into this.
I just can't imagine a scenario where I would have to prove that I bought a doughnut. Some skeptical friend: "Don't even act like I didn't get that doughnut! I got the documentation right here...oh, wait it's at home...in the file...under 'D', for doughnut

I usually tell them to toss it.
They are annoying and just end up crumpled in my truck. I'd rather have them emailed for larger purchases but I never feel like typing in my email address

It’s for your record for balancing your checkbook or credit card or whatever.
With online banking and the ability to see exactly the state of your entire portfolio in seconds it’s mostly obsolete. I still track all of my purchases for budgeting but do it online rather than collecting and tabulating receipts like the generation before me did.

I've tried to explain to my mother that she doesn't have to balance her checkbook. All she has to do is look at her online account, see which checks cleared and subtract the outstanding checks. I might as well have been explaining it to her dog.

Yeah, and I have expense reports where I need them. Compiling them digitally will be bitch going through all my emails rather than just having the paper receipts on hand.

I like to dig them out of the garbage at home depot, pull the items off the shelf and bring them with the receipt to the return counter.
