I grew up in South Louisiana but I'm probably not technically a coonass. My mom is from the Midwest and my dad's family is from Mississippi. I am half French though.

The technical term for this is yankee stumpjumper.

Coonass is like redneck and hillbilly a large part of the time it is simply an accurate descriptor when it is used like for example "you piece of shite sorry arse redneck piece of trash" and you are being serious you won't be making a new friend.

Most aren’t and most of the ones that are were told to be offended by it, 30 years ago nobody gave a crap and was proud of the term.

I do find my hackles go up a little when a non Cajun uses it in an insulting manner, but I generally ignore it.

i had some idiot freak out when i called myself a coonass. he jumped all up in my shite for being a racist so i asked him how can i be a racist for saying i am a proud coonass? he had no answer, then he just vanished like a fart in the wind

then several other people started poping in saying thats insulting to black people????????????

after i explained a coonass was just a Scandinavian/french mix, they all frickin got butt hurt saying i should have explained that before making my comment

then they vanished since they had nothing to get triggered over to earn their virtue signalling points

This shows typical backwards coonass thinking

Not all farts in the wind vanish. It would depend on both the strength of the wind as well as the strength of the fart. Both these factors must be taken into consideration before you make one of your coonass generalizations.

No, it’s a term of endearment.

Coonass is often used to refer to the german descendants living in the river parishes. These Germans inner-married with creoles and cajuns and became absorbed into the overall culture. The germans brought sausage-making traditions to Louisiana.

What makes me chuckle are the self proclaimed "cajuns" who believe the word "coonass" is a racial slur against cajuns.. As if "cajun" is a race.

That's exactly it.

Coonass is nothing more than a swamp version of Mississippi/alabama redneck and Arkansas hillbilly.

Used to fly for an outfit that proudly had Coonass painted on the tail. Someone in a position to cause trouble saw it and assumed it was offensive, caused trouble and we were forced to remove it from the jets.

last winter while wearing an LSU sweatshirt in a local resterraunt I was questioned by a pair of winter Texans from Minnesota about the term coonass. I asked them if they had seen a raccoon in their travels. there are lots of dead ones by the road. I told them the term was descriptive of the brown spot uncovered when you lift the tail. they said okeyyyy.
