Im in the minority, but i really like volkswagen cars. Ive had excellent service from a few of them as commuters. Maintenance is more important vs Toyota. They are more difficult to work on, require special tools and electronics.

Dollar for dollar toyota etc is better. The volkswagens dont totally suck arse to drive and are a little more comfortable when comparing base trim to base trim.

Bingo, but what one to buy? Different levels, different prices. The bumper to bumper is the best, you pay more, but it covers everything.

My last 4 Toyotas, I put a total of close to 650,000 miles. The only major expense, an A/C compressor, $525, that’s it.

Your repair costs are going to be less than that warranty. The warranty just lets you finance the repair in most cases.

Warranty’s, you can negotiate the price. But then again, never needed an extended warranty with a Toyota.

If your only concern is the cheapest possible repair cost then something cheap is the way to go.

To the point of the OP was asking if the step up in quality and luxury is worth the increase in repair cost. It certainly is.

The quality and luxury are every single day. The repair costs are few and far between.

I bring my Mercedes to a local guy and he does oil for 90, full eval for free. Nonsense emissions testing is about 45, total bill is always less than 150.

I guess I got lucky because he hasn’t warned me of any upcoming jobs. Run flats are a lot - I think last I checked it’s $1500 per rim.

It’s also not my daily driver which definitely helps.

I moved away from the run flats. It seems like a better ride but that could be in my head.

I remember when german/luxury cars all went away from factory spares included and people howled about how impractical it was and what a shaft those cars were.

Now no one has spares and people realized that it isn't the 1930's with getting roadside assistance or flats every 10 miles.

Agreed. If it was my daily, I’d probably look to buy custom rims and tires. I bought it when I was like 26 so I didn’t care for the specs - it was a Mercedes lol.

Only if you lease and keep them under warranty and maintenance plans.

Is there any real way to answer this question?

The utility of a vehicle is to get you and whatever else you want to transport from Point A to Point B. Any car that runs and is big enough to hold you and whatever else you want to transport will check that box.

There are some objective factors that can be named, such as the cost of ownership, but in the final analysis what you are weighing those things against is your own personal perception of the "experience" of driving it.

Maybe a better question to ask might be, "Is it really true that these cars cost around 3k a year in maintenance and repair?"

Because nobody can really decide if it's worth it to you but you.

Even with a warranty you'll still pay just not as much. Still doesn't stop me from want an m2, or 3 fun little cars to drive.
