Gas logs for the living room, wood burning fireplace outside. best of both. clean burning without the smell inside.

It’s not the same experience as a wood fireplace but I don’t consider it trashy. Both are equally outdated and main purpose is for ambiance.

Depends on the setup really.
FWIW, the built in gas flames on something like a TV stand or entertainment shelving are trashy as f***.

I wouldn't call it trashy as I have seen some nice setups, but I prefer a wood burning fire.

I have had both and, like the others say, I miss the crackling, etc. of real wood. As I get older, I have become less interested in the work involved in a wood-burning fireplace. If you burn the fireplace regularly, it does not take long to break even on gas logs. Buy yourself a quality set of unvented logs so you can keep the flue closed, and they will be 100% efficient!

Like others say, gas logs are convenient, but I can only leave mine on for a few hours due to the fume smell. Yes, I have cleaned the logs and rocks. Would use it more if the smell wasn't so bad.

Now, that’s trashy….

Anyone calling gas logs trashy is just jealous that they can’t start their fire from the couch using a remote like I can ??.
Why do you care what others think? Do whatever suits your lifestyle.

We got gas log setup in the fireplace for my grandmother a couple of years ago.
She was in her early 90's at the time and although very independent (still cooked, drove to church, went to the grocery store, etc..) there was no way she was going to go outside and get wood off the pile to put in the fireplace.
We got a gas log system setup for her and she really enjoyed it and it did look good I'll admit, with the way it was setup.

Same setup here. Back to back FP with the inside converted to gas log and the outside real wood. Use a remote to adjust the flame and amazing how well the gas logs heat.
I use these now and then for the burning wood smell effect.

I lost power early this morning. Cranked up the gas logs and kept the whole house comfortable. I’m very happy to have that level of convenience today

Used to burn wood in my fireplace and got tired of the smell the next morning and it messed up my sinuses. Got gas logs and never looked back. Got them burning right now. Living room is toasty.

Kudos on an excellent topic for the OT.
I used to think wood fireplaces were the only true fireplace and that gas logs were trashy.
Then I bought a house that had a gas fireplace. I installed a remote ignition system, and boom I can light a fire while sitting on my arse on the couch and never have to add more wood every 30 minutes. It’s an amazing life changer.
I’m definitely on team gas logs now.

Def. trashy. For anyone complaining about cleaning out ash, chopping wood, etc, that's for the butler and stable boy to handle (no stable boy = trashy fwiw)

Not trashy. Just make sure you educate yourself on the different types. Some are made for vented fireplaces, others for ventless. The price differences on each can be quite significant, as can the smell if you don’t buy the proper type for you fireplace set up.

I had wood in my last house. I found myself not lighting the fireplace because I did not want to clean it afterwards. Also, firewood was attracting termites outside. If you get a pack or two to burn that day its gone within a few hours.
New house has gas fireplaces. I use them often. Although it does not have the charm of a crackling fire, its simple and looks pleasant when its on.

Why would gas logs be considered trashy?
I had them in my previous house. Worked great. Flip a switch, you have the looks and warmth of a wood fireplace without the hassle of getting wood, storing it, dragging it inside, and keeping it clean.

My old house had a massive wood fireplace, which was great.
New home only has gas option. It is convenient, I have a gas log, and it’s fine. It’s a two way fireplace which is nice and something I don’t think I could do with wood…? Maybe wrong
Anyways, gas is more convenient but I miss the crackle of the wood fire and the smell.

?
My ventless gas fireplace heats my house like nothing else. It was 8 degrees this morning and my HVAC system barely had to kick on once the fire was on for a bit. Great to give the machines a break in brutal winter time.

I don't think so. I have seen some in pretty nice homes.
