Are dental x-rays a scam?

I can’t remember a time when a dentist has ever reviewed them with me in any capacity. Do they serve any real purpose other than billing?
I started pushing back against just getting my head zapped because I sat down in the chair.

They typically don’t take them that often. I’ve only had it done when I switched dentists. And yea he reviewed them with me

When I get work done or switch dentists they have done them. But they always reviewed them with me also. Maybe switch dentists?

I get xrays once a year.. and go to the dentist twice a year. So every other visit? I thought this was standard.

I normally look at xrays in my office at my computer. Unless I find something worth talking about, I don't go over them with the patient because
1) If there is nothing wrong they are boring to look at
2) The patient has no clue what they are looking at anyway.
But no, they are not a scam.

I dialed them back to every 3-4 years unless they needed to look at a particular area for problems.
I don't like that radiation hitting my head either!

I am gonna go out on a limb here and posit that XRAYS generate revenue.

Why do you think they’re a scam? I doubt you’d even know what you’re looking at if your dentist went over them with you.

Everything generates revenue.
The exam, the xray, the extraction, the implant, the crown.
Just because it generates revenue doesn't mean its a scam.
If you thought you broke your leg, you would need an xray to look at the hard tissue surrounded by soft tissue.
Your teeth are not different. 75% of your tooth is below the gums and is in bone. Without the xray, you would miss cavities in between teeth, infection, defects or damage to the surrounding bone, etc, etc. You have to have an xray to diagnose hard tissue that isn't visible.

Insurance will pay for dental X-rays once a year and cleaning twice a year.
Guess how many of each your dentist will schedule.
I started refusing the X-rays a while back. Seems like once every few years or if issues is enough.

A recent one helped identify a potential root canal needed (which flared up big time in the week I was waiting for my endodontist appointment).
My current dentist always reviews my X-rays with me to show when/where I may need fillings or other work at my bi-annual cleaning.

Most people could use a cleaning every quarter if we are honest. People dont want to pay out of pocket for anything so that is why they only schedule when insurance will pay.
Most insurance companies won't pay for implants. That doens't mean they aren't necessary.

42 years old. Never had a cavity. Haven't been to the dentist in at least 8 years. Brush, floss, rinse, repeat.

Dentist takes them every six months when I get teeth cleaned. Nothing ever discussed. Seems scammy. Might start refusing.

this right here. not isolated to dentistry. anything medical.
god forbid things generate revenue. everyone loves working for nothing right?
