love when they visit for audits. The conference room that catches all the afternoon sunlight and has the worst ventilation is always reserved for them. No one else even uses this conference room.
The staff now don’t know how good they have it with remote capabilities.

Yes. I was an auditor at a firm in Baton Rouge. The worst.

Did they build the conference room specifically just to troll auditors?
The more insulting move was to throw the team in separate open cubes around the office.

My supervisors are not very helpful, and they’re kind of dicks honestly. They tell me to ask questions, but then they get pissy and look at me like I’m stupid if I ask a question. The whole thing stinks.
Yea those people suck dick at night. Be a better person than them, remember they are irrelevant people away from work, don’t think about them away from work. Only think about them when they are speaking to you while at work. When at work and they are not speaking to you, take care of your shite obviously, talk to better people, find a new job, etc.
As someone who is a supervisor, thinking you are better than everyone because of that, makes you look stupid, nobody respects you, and everyone thinks you do gay butt stuff at home. Be a good supervisor, if your employees suck, it’s because you suck.

miserable existences
I know that is a lot of people's experience but I love my job. The first three years particularly are a grind especially since you don't know what you are doing but this years Craveth scale starting comp for a 1st year was $235k and 7th years are making $515k so it makes up for a lot of crap. The biggest con now is the chances of making partner have become slim at most firms and non-existent in others.

I'm thankful for my 2 years as an audit associate at a CPA firm, it made me a really good accountant and helped me get over some imposter syndrome.
That said, I will never ever ever ever go back. Especially with a small child. Stupid hours. Lame pay.
Working at a CPA firm is essential just useful for connections and for getting alot of new stuff thrown at you. It makes you a better accountant.
My favorite CPA firm-ism is the "we aren't like other CPA firms, we offer a work life balance" yet they will fricking hound you for going over budget

How many hours do you honestly work a week. I went to Big 4 due to "work-life balance." I still had to bill 40 hours a week which came out to like 55-60 hours in the office a week.

Looking back, the first couple years were awesome because the work was exactly what you expect and the curve balls were relatively minor. It's better if you're actually good at what you're doing, but the job was easy in retrospect. Bad managers is what made it challenging, but I had great managers most of the time.

I was in advisory, so I didn't have to deal with client hate. I've had dinner at a client's home, been invited to the wedding of a client's child, and generally had way more great working relationships than bad ones.

No. There are worse places to work.

Look for another one. Try the environment change. Could just be the specific firm.
Then if that doesnt work, there is a wide field of opportunities in the finance world if you are a CPA

It’s the same as any other work place. Some suck arse some are pretty darn good. Depends on leadership and what you look for at work.
If you interview somewhere ask if someone from the department can show you around. If they’re hesitant it’ll tell you everything you need to know

Wife is Big4 alum in industry now.
You don’t get big salaries without big work. No such thing as a free lunch, my man.

Worked at a Big 4 firm. Absolute worst experience of my life. Get your CPA license and get your experience then jump to industry for a big increase

Any of you guys have a terrible experience at a CPA firm?
It really depends on the firm.
I changed firms not too long ago. I had gotten to the point that I was miserable at my old firm. I felt stagnant in my profession and was stretched way too thin. I was on the verge of getting out of PA but felt I owed it to myself to try another firm out since I had put so much work into getting my CPA.
Instead I went to another local firm and since then I’ve been much happier. I’m with a great team and have really grown in my short time here.
Don’t be afraid to change things up.

WSJ had an article on this in September.
Job Security Isn’t Enough to Keep Many Accountants From Quitting

“The job security and the ability to have a comfortable life motivated me at first,” said Khokhar, who served as a senior accountant at two construction firms and senior auditor at an accounting firm. “But once I started, had some work and life experience, I realized there are better options out there.”

I made it 10 months. It was the most unhappy I've ever been.
