I’m normally in agreement with that, but in terms of welfare, I’m not opposed to paying for somebody’s food who’s poor and trying to get an education.

I would much rather pay for the education and food of somebody getting a STEM degree than prison meals and welfare of an able-bodied moocher.

I say this as a kid that had parents that did not pay for my school and kicked me out at 19. And I graduated debt free working 40-50 hour weeks.

I didn’t figure out that I needed to emancipate myself to get FAFSA till I was a junior. I will grant that my parents covered my health and auto insurance till then.

I don’t think anyone should receive food stamps. If I were to make an exception to my rule, it would be for college kids. I’d rather a struggling college student get my tax dollars as opposed to ***redacted due to possible ban***.

As a former struggling but employed college student some time ago, I just came to here to downvote.

Some of my friends in college were on them. They got little help from their parents. They are all now very productive members of society.

They can if they either work a minimum of 20 hours per week at minimum wage, have a work study job, or have a child under age 6. Parents claiming them on taxes isn’t a factor. But if anyone 18-22 still lives with their parents, they have to include the parents and any siblings on the case and all income for the whole household is countable.

Strongly disagree with you on this one. I think there are several legit situations where food stamps are needed.

Problem is that way too many abuse the system, making the public angry and forgetting about those the system was made for in the first place.

Not everyone on food stamps is the stereotype we think of today....able bodied lazy person popping out kids like a pez dispenser in order to get more government money.

Maybe, but the struggling college student is a passage of life. It teaches you to survive with what you have and be frugal. I know it taught me how to grocery shop and cook.

Now there are exceptions to every rule but in general, no a college student shouldn't get food stamps.

I live half the year in southern Oklahoma. I would say close to 50% of the people have a CDIB (certificate of degree of Indian blood) which they can get anything from food to housing with. It's not going the way they wish it would.

I don't see why feeding someone who commits 12-18 hours per week to schooling is the responsibility of the American public.

I’d rather feed someone who commits 12-18 hours per week to schooling rather than someone who commits 0 hours a week and sits on their arse all day collecting a check.

I live right next to an Indian reservation. It's crazy...all these nice Scottsdale businesses are being built on the technically Salt River rez land cause the tribe sees a big money opportunity. But if you drive more onto the rez....like a night and day difference between the Scottsdale neighborhoods that border the rez and the ones actually on the rez.

And have driven through the really bad ones up in near Page, AZ.

I know what you are talking about...some of the most depressing areas.

And yes...many take advantage of that. We have INH here and a dedicated Indian hospital. Hell a former friend of mine got her doctorate of nursing paid for with free money because she is 100% Navajo.

Then you've not spend time around our population for which this was designed.

Plenty of your fellow Americans are in need, through no fault of their own--and are working their asses off to remedy their lot in life.

I had some friends go this route, and most of them that did ended up not making a ton of their life. If you're able bodied and capable of working, wussing out and going that route is just going to hurt you long term.

what I was thinking, going to college is not an extension of hs, there's a lot more to the education than just what's in the classroom, learning how to budget time and money, and just figuring out how to make things work out, going the food stamp/welfare route to me just goes against that mind set
