Are children the purpose of marriage?

I’ve heard this said many times and I find it odd. Not because I think it’s “normal” to marry and not have children, but because I think that the religious institution of marriage is the joining of two people irrespective of children.

For me, yes
If I didn't want children, I would not have gotten married

May not be the purpose, but the decision to have kids makes a whole lot more sense between two people that have formed a legally binding relationship.
Same with buying a house or any other major life choice.

mehh everyone is different. I married my wife when we were 24. We had no plans of kids, and enjoyed time with just us. As time went on we wanted something more, as our friends startes having children we saw something we were missing. So after 10years of marriage had our little boy last year, and i dont know how or why we waited so long now. Pure joy

My child is, I'm on the count down until his 18th birthday.
That's the day I'm getting divorced.

My sister's getting married and doesn't want children. In that situation I don't see the point at all other than to say you're married (which is a woman thing), but to each their own.

LOL, already questioning why you got married, huh? Hasn't even been a year yet, has it?

That might be one of Alec Baldwin's best lines in any movie.

So if you found that your wife was unable to bear children, you’d divorce her? Was that in the vows or are we making it up as we go along?

The purpose of marriage is love, companionship, and to ease the burden on one another of this often shitty life. Children often are a byproduct, sometimes not, out of design or circumstance.

What a hurtful thing to say. You should be ashamed of yourself
