Marriage isn't specifically a religious institution. In the past marriage was also used for political purposes. Nowadays i guess it could help with taxes.

But you wouldn’t have married her to begin with if that were the case? That’s what you said.

If we didn't want children, yes. We would not have gotten married.

That doesn't mean we wouldn't be together.

And this is what I was always getting at. In the absence of children, would the love for you S/O be strong enough that you would have been able to commit to her for life (outside of marriage)? Because to me, that is the purpose of marriage.

Yes.

Cool. I disagree.

I believe the purpose of marriage is creating a stable environment for a family.

That’s a huge leap to a conclusion. Like you clear jumped off the jumpnto conclusion mat. That is not what he said at all.

Not wanting to have kids and wanting to but not being able too are completely different circumstances

If you have kids it does. Studies have shown married couples result in statistically more successful children. more successful than parents just living together

Unable and unwilling are two completely different adjectives and completely change the course of a marriage. Unable means adoption. Unwilling means you have a permanent roommate who can take half the shite if she decides to move out

I don’t think we really disagree. You would have effectively married your wife, without the formality of a wedding ceremony. You recognize the importance of a commitment to a lasting bond, irrespective of children.

of course not. No where in my vows, or the pre determined vows so many use, does it mention children.

I would argue that reproduction is the basic biological purpose of every living organism on Earth, and marriage is a byproduct of that purpose in humans.

His wife told him, in no uncertain terms, to start this thread.

Exactly.

The latter situation makes no sense to me from the man's persepctive with the laws as currently constructed.

So if you found that your wife was unable to bear children, you’d divorce her?

We would have went through that together and considered adoption.

But your point is silly because you didn't know your wife was infertile when married so it doesn't invalidate the marriage is for children position.

Why even bother with marriage if you don't want to have kids (tax aspects?)? You can be a committed couple without the piece of paper and are free to go if it begins to suck, anyway.
