A female stylist has been cutting my hair for over 35 years. She can out cut any barber I know.

In Birmingham they are. Talking about the type shop where it is just a straight guy, chair, and a cut that cost you less than $15. I am not sure how profitable owning one can be, but that industry has always intrigued me. Once you establish a client base, they are typically loyal to a fault, and it is not labor intensive.

There is one off Florida Blvd and Cora that is two old men that talk about politics and sports and use the scissors to cut everything, no trimmers. They also will offer you a cold beer or whiskey neat when you walk in the door.

Black folks have a special relationship with their barbers. They view it different than we do. I had a black roommate for awhile and he would go every Saturday morning to get a haircut and 'lined up' and then hang out for a few hours. Every single Saturday. I couldn't even tell he got a haircut but he sure as hell wasnt missing that appt.

I'd be interested in trying one of the hipster barber shops, but I haven't heard of any down here on the Coast. So until then, I'll just keeping hitting up the Aveda salons.

When I moved into town, I was lucky enough to find a white person's barbershop owned by a relatively young guy. That place is crazy busy.

It is hard finding a barbershop just by browsing the internet.

Actually making a comeback here. There are several old school shops that have popped up in the last few years. Staffed by young barbers
