This shopping center near the house that we go to a lot just installed some sort of automated parking thing that once you drive onto the lot, it sends you a text saying your parking trip has started and then ends it when you leave. Mind you there’s no gate to go in and take a ticket, it’s all automated with sensors I guess. I also never signed up for it, gave it my card, or my cell phone, but I still get the texts (which is creepy in and of itself).

It tells me my bill at the end (and my cumulative bill). I just delete it right away as it reeks of those stop light cameras that mailed you bills but were totally not enforceable. Are these things legal? They simply hoping some pay out of fear, or is it legit?

Tell the Detroit fire hydrant thieves to steal these damn sensors too, that all sounds so stupid.

Shopping centers charging you to park is news to me.

I’d find somewhere new with the quickness.

You’re comparing private lots with public streets. I would never shop at a place that did that, but I’ll support a business’ right to do what it wants on its own property (as long as they are fairly charging everyone).

I’m no lawyer, but I guess since you’re not breaking a law by parking there (unless they tell you that you’re banned), all they can do is report it as an unpaid bill to your credit score.

$100 minimum every time I leave the house.
$200 if we bring the kids.

Wild guess. He registered at some other private lot and this lot uses the same operator, which already has his data.

I would bet that you have parked somewhere that is operated by the same parking company and signed up and you just don’t recall or did t put it together that it’s the same company. It’s a result of many pay to park places going to electronic systems. No longer is each parking lot its own business, but they can be connected and operated by the same company, even in different cities and states.

You can not pay it, but don't be surprised if one day you come out of the store and your car is in a boot.

No they can't.

The worst they can do is boot your car the next time you park on one of their lots

This sounds right.

I have been two garages recently that have a QR code to pay. I'm not scanning a QR code that is plastered on the wall in a public space. I have never paid at either garage and I have never gotten a text from either garage. When I drive to the exit, the arm rises and lets me out every time.

If you have to pay for parking, you are probably trespassing if you don’t pay

At any rate, they hold all of the cards…if you want to shop there, pay for parking, catch an uber, or find somewhere else to shop.

You cut the quote in half. As I said, if they trespass you, then you are banned.

This is the only way it could’ve happened. All of the public parking spots in town here have gone to the QR code parking apps. I don’t mind them, but I didn’t know this would happen as I certainly never signed up at this center.
