I’ve admittedly not traveled much outside of the states. But I do look at a lot of architecture, infrastructure, and other building projects abroad. Particularly in Europe where the engineering seems relatively advanced and the aesthetics are always on point.

I dunno
Louisiana is definitely a slummy backwater in comparison but I’ve seen a lot of the country and can’t help but feel like we are behind and by a lot.

Look around, everyone has expensive clothes, expensive phones, expensive cars, go on expensive vacations. Its hard to believe these people aren't in debt.

You’re probably looking at structures built well before the hordes took over Europe.

We use the same guy to design a prison, high school and library. Yeah, we suck.

I think the US architecture is on par with other cities but not some of the newer more modern ones. And that’s simply because the US isn’t throwing up lots of new skyscrapers like you see in places like Dubai.

Louisiana, especially New Orleans, is one of the few places in the US that is recognized and associated with specific things (jazz, food, Mardi Gras, Cajuns, etc).

You are comparing the most impressive structures in the world to typical Louisiana architecture. There are many buildings, bridges, stadiums, etc. that are elite in America if you focus on the top tier.

You are only seeing the high points.

I have been to 4 continents and they are plenty of shitty areas all over the globe. Including 1st world countries.

Only exception I have is Singapore but that is basically a really rich city masquerading as a country.

why do people keep trying to come here then?

And yes, I know most immigrants are from shitty countries, but not all of them

Europe was built by the aristocracy. The US was built by free market investors.

I don’t consider Singapore an authentic Asian country. It’s like the Disney World of Asia.

I went to LSU and practiced architecture on the east coast and in Europe for a few years. Generally speaking, Europe and several developing countries around the world are more advanced in their design aesthetic and building systems than here in the states.

It’s amazing how so many “world travelers” forget this point. Even the top European countries are largely filled with poors living in shite housing, you just don’t visit those areas.

stadiums

This alone should tell you a lot. We have eight COLLEGE stadiums that hold more than 100,000 people in this country. Off of the top of my head, I can think of three stadiums in the world outside of the USA that can hold 100,000 (Azteca, one in Rio, and one in North Korea). I'm sure there are more, but my point stands. This obviously isn't some be all end all stat, but it is telling.

Society and culture are definitely going downhill, but it's still a hell of a lot better here than in most other places.

I don’t deny that. I was living next door to this stunning structure the past couple of months. You don’t see buildings like this in the US.
