Are 6 month dental cleanings necessary in this day and age?

I go once a year and never had a cavity. They always tell me how nice my teeth are too. I get it being more needed when electric tooth brushes, etc weren't around but paying $277 for X-rays and a cleaning today made me reconsider.

The no cavity thing has some to do with genetics (like everything else) but I also question how necessary it is to go twice per year. And why on earth are x rays needed annually? To get a more thorough picture of any cavities forming?

No, our teeth are far more advanced and resilient than they were even 20 years ago. Much of it is due to genetics, but there is the factor of the flour instead water. Honestly even once a year is too much, maybe once every five years.

I get a cleaning every 6 months & x rays once a year through my dental insurance
300.00 isn’t much if you catch something early, major dental work is expensive

I was bitching to my wife about going for a cleaning. Turns out I had a cavity. Sad.

My dentist, who posts here only does X-rays once a year.. clean twice.. if the hygienist doesn’t notice anything on non X-ray visits I may not even see the dentist

I went three years without a cleaning once and the dentist said I had some of the best looking teeth he’d ever seen.

I do try to go every 6 months now though. I think genetics have a lot to do with it. Diet as well.

I missed a couple of cleanings..The hygienist (no pics she is HOT) said that I must use Colgate Total because my teeth didn't need that much cleaning.

My mom has a mouth full of cavities so I'm not sure it's genetics.

My last appointment was scheduled for Sept of 2005. Katrina happened 2 weeks before and I haven't been since.

Cleanings and checkups are free with the last three or four insurances I have had. Why are you paying for yours?

My (2) six month cleaning per year and one set of X-rays cost as much as your one cleaning with X-rays. You are paying too much

I haven't ever had a cavity. Been twice since Katrina, and both times, she commented how good they were. Spent maybe five minutes scraping them. They aren't necessary for me

It is simply a way for white collar workers to get out of work two days a year.
