I completely understand having some stuff to keep them occupied. Stuffed animal, doll, single toy car or whatever

3-4ish year old kid in front of me proceeds to set up full hot wheels set with loop, wind up car and send that thing flying into the aisle

Somebody gave the car back and kid proceeds to do it again. Parents gave no fricks

Anything goes in cry room IMO but to roll like that in the nave gotdamn

When I was a kid the answer was exactly zero.

A noisy hot wheels track is over the top.

Generally, as much as they need to keep them occupied and quiet. We sit in the back pew with our 4 year old and newborn to limit distractions for others and that way we have a quick get away route if things start going south.

My church handed out pre-reader/early reader versions of the bulletin and crayons in little bags.

It helped the kids follow along as they could color each segment of service, hymns, readings, prayers, announcements, sermon, etc.. it would have a coloring page that fit the theme of the sermon.

It is a good balance of familiarizing them with services while still giving them something to work with to be busy.

May the Lord forgive me for judging people who go to church more than I do... but I would suggest the answer is zero or go to the nursery. If you wouldn't do it at a movie theater, not sure how its appropriate in a house of worship.

The bulletin and a small pencil was all I got.

And we didn’t get this amusement style Sunday school while the parents were in big church. If you were out of the nursery, you went to both.

And no cushions on the pews!

Looking back, probably a lot of life lessons and skills learned with that even without the preaching.

One of my early memories is sitting in church with my grandmother and watching her draw a watermelon truck for me.

No toys. Maybe a small snack and coloring books. If that is not enough, we'll do a quick walk around in the foyer to help with the restlessness.
