Apple’s obsession with thin

They’re not going to be happy until they make a device that is so thin you won’t be able to see it.

It would sell like gangbusters if we had a magic battery that allowed it to have all day battery life. We don’t, and it doesn’t, so it doesn’t.
In the mobile tech world, you can have thin and light, powerful, and long battery life. But you can only have two on any given device.

I think Apple is doing OK.

Their stuff is actually getting thicker.
My first iPad was super thin- so thin it eventually bowed. My new one is chonkier. Same for my old phone/new phone.

At some point the strength will be sacrificed and people will be snapping their iPhones in half

Fatigue is real, or so I've heard.

I had an iphone 4 and loved how compact it was. I don't want to do everything on my phone, I can get a laptop or tablet for general browsing. I am basically forced every four years to just buy whatever Pro model is out there.

I wouldn’t call it an “obsession”. It’s one phone in this current model year, the other 2 are normal sized.
And they’re not the only ones. Samsung has the S25 Edge. I think OnePlus is working on one also.
One take (from MKBHD I think) is that this is a way for manufacturers to test whether smaller components are viable before putting them into fodables, or flagships that they can’t afford to screw up on. iPhone Air can fail as long as they learn some things from it.

They did the same thing with the iPod only they kept trying to shrink it to the size of a postage stamp.

I have had an iPhone since the first iPhone. The only complaint i have is i wish the battery life was better.

I had one in college

Had one of those as a kid. Hated I couldn’t see what song was about to play or pick what I wanted, had to hit the next button a lot

No you’re not. Another example of people not spending wisely. But of course you will find a reason to justify your actions.

I was at a conference in 2008 and Steve Jobs said his vision for the iPhone was for it to eventually be credit card thin and he predicted 2030 as the desired timeframe.

The Air has less features and is more prone to overheating. No surprise. Feels great but that's it.

But it doesn’t even use the premiere battery technology that we do have (silicon carbon batteries)

Apple's idea of innovation today is to tinker with sizes and weight, not function

When Jobs died, the creative innovation side of the company went away.
Their product is secure no doubt and better than Microsoft. But they’re going to be making aesthetic changes going forward.
Everything they do upgrades the cameras on the phone currently. It’s very obvious that they want to become a production company that makes its own cameras.

Premier in multiple facets, but not in all. I wonder if its expansion/contraction behavior would cause problems in such a thin enclosure.
