You have a 4 year old phone. That's not just an updated iOS slowing you down.
The iPhone X is fantastic actually. It's actually not much more expensive than phones have been over the last couple years, but people are only just realizing it because all the carriers have now switched to payment plans instead of subsidized phones.

i had no issues on my 6S after updating to the new ios.
I'm going to upgrade phone next time I drive by the AT&T store and it isn't crowded. Not sure if I'll go with 8 plus or the 10.
My iPad pro works like a champ.
My macbook pro is the best lap top I've ever owned.
My iMac is still working like a boss or I would get an iMac Pro.
Really looking forward to Apple home so I can get rid of all the echo's and echo dots in the house.

Hard to complain about my 6. I have gotten so much use out of it. My battery isn’t what it used to be. But I don’t own another product that I have used as much as this phone. The price per use is a fraction of a penny.

Yea. I have thought the same thing about apple since Steve Jobs died. Their direction was all about the future, now it seems like they're selling the same shite, changing a few things around on it, and then calling it groundbreaking.
I never update my iPhone, because every upgrade Ive ever gotten has more bugs, kills my battery, or just hurts my phone. Then you tell Apple that, and they say.. well now You have to upgrade your entire phone, because our new upragded software won't run on your old phone. The entire company has become like a giant scam.
I remember being pissed when they "upgraded" me to an iPhone 6. They took out the head-phone jack, and said it was "better and more efficient" to have evything going into one power source on the phone. Well now when I'm on long drives, and want to listen to music the entire time, I can't. because my phone dies faster than my iPhone 4 or 5, and you can't listen to music and charge your phone at the same time, because they now go into the same goddamn hole. It fricking sucks. There is absolutely nothing better about my iPhone 6 compared to my 5. In fact its a worse phone, that looks a little nicer from the outside.
ETA: I have an iPhone 7, which I found out is worse than the 6.

You're forgetting the scientific computing community that for many, many years was forced to use OpenOffice or LibreOffice to communicate with the outside world.
There are a lot of Apple users solely due to 'ssh -X' and *.docx
