No, they weren't. That comes from a 19th century painter. It's a clear exaggeration.

Nope, I’m not. Many people, including Thomas Jefferson, remarked and how large they were. It’s well established.

They were "certainly the most gigantic men we have ever seen," Jefferson wrote to Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin on 12 July 1804.

quote:

"The Osages are so tall and robust as almost to warrant the application of the term gigantic: few of them appear to be under six feet, and many are above it. Their shoulders and visages are broad, which tend to strengthen the idea of their being giants." —John Bradbury1

Yes, Emerald Mound. It's only a replica of the original one, but it's still a really cool place to visit.

Skeletons of giant size, 7 to 10 feet, have also been found in Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel and the Caucasus Mountain region.

coastal Indians ate a lot of oysters, thus the proportionate sizing made them tall

Doesn't Cabeza de Vaca translate to Cow Head?

Europeans and European explorers were short. The Indians encountered were large in comparison, but probably no bigger than average Americans today

Yep, head of a cow. I suppose there is a story...needed a specially built helmet.

You can go on the internet and find out scores of information on giants and the skeletal remains that have been found around the world.
Steve Quayle puts out interesting stuff.

I think it would be cool if we went back to using surnames as sort of an identification like they used to do.

Your dad worked at the village mill, you were a Miller. If your family raised chickens for sale, you were a Hatcher.

I guess his family all had giant heads so they were Cabeza de Vaca

My reading was that it was mostly original, with some small parts rebuilt?

There are many skeletons of unusual height. Some are at the Smithsonian.

And Europeans measured native Americans contemporaneously.

They Indians told stories of defeating the giants that were here before them. Lovelock Cave is the most notorious setting for giants in America. The Indians said the pyramids that used to be around St. Louis were there when they got there.

That isn't even addressing the little people that were claimed to exist. On the Lewis and Clark expedition they supposedly saw one of their mounds and none of the indians would go near it.

Also need to keep in mind that people shrunk a foot after leaving the hunter gatherer lifestyle for agriculture.
