Go buy a game camera (used for hunting) and strap it somewhere fairly hidden pointing straight at your door. You can find one for $100. Call the cops now and tell them exactly what is going on.
I would be tempted to park my car in another spot, sit down in my recliner facing the door with all of the lights off and have my gun pointed at the door, but I would more than likely get into all sorts of legal trouble due to premedidation because of all the chickenshit lawyers these days. It's a shame when you are just trying to defend your own property.

What you should do is spray a tic tac toe grid around the X and place an O.

By law, defense of property is not a legal form of justifiable homocide.

Yup, but it goes without saying that you are obviously in fear of your life if someone forces their way into your home. I should have elaborated further. That's why I didnt say "park your car somewhere else and when they walk up to your front door and break in walk up behind them and put a bullet in their head". Although that is proper justice, it is illegal. Sitting in your home and someone comes through the front door forcibly however, you are justified to use whatever means necessary to stop the threat to your life.

The spray paint of the X and straight line are probably a utility company tracking some underground pipes or cables.
That's one hell of a coincidence then.

Is it worth while to take out the short screws they use on the plate and replace with 3-4 inch screws?
Screws aren't the issue. It's the cheap cylinders in the locks themselves and the cheapness overall. If you want a lock that is impossible to get in it's going to cost you about $200 per but it's the best there is.

We've had AT&T u-verse being installed throughout the neighborhood and have spray paint everywhere. Hopefully it's just that but OP needs to be super cautious. I'd definitely get a dog and camera security system to watch while neither of you are home.

Is there a cheaper version that is still a decent deadbolt? You have me all freaked out about my lock now

Schlage commercial locks are pretty good and reasonable. Not the cheap residential ones because those are only slightly harder than a Kwikset style lock.

Back story: I live in an apartment complex (town homes technically), with my sister as a roommate (no pics). Area is mostly quiet, neighbors don't bother anyone, everyone is friendly.
If this is Sharlo, then yes. Someone was trying to break into your place. They will also try again at a later date, so be ready.

You do any work in the San Diego area?

Is this true in Texas? I thought you could shoot someone in Texas during property theft. It has to be worth a certain dollar amount though, maybe? I'm obviously not sure of this at all.

Nah. Bank work on vacant houses in dry climates sucks. Not as much damage as a house that deals with different seasons. You're basically just doing maintenance work and not many major repairs. No money in maintenance.
