Check out the street view.

There's a frickhuge Baptist megachurch just a few blocks down.

Can't tell if it doubles as a school or not.

Also some interesting people nearby. Like the guy in the Cubs hat standing on a street sign.

Gotta go back further but detroit was thriving at one point at the height of the US auto industry. Tons of beautiful old homes rotting. It's a shame.

Was a great city up until the riots in the 60's. Been downhill ever since.

Saying that, I do feel that if a guy got a group together and bought up everything in about a 10 block area and rehabbed it all I think that might be successful. (Would probably need a wall around it and then you'll be racist.) There are a couple enclaves in Detroit proper that are pretty decent but even then the property values are far below a similar place out in the suburbs.

eta-Palmer Woods and Indian Village are nice as I recall. Should also be noted they have their own private security patrolling.

I'm curious about places like this and what they used to be like 30-40 years ago. Were these thriving communities at any point or always a mess?

Detroit was one of the best cities in America, but it was longer than 30-40 years ago. There were some big money neighborhoods and thriving ethnic enclaves.

This site has some nice virtual tours of the ruins and shows what things once were:

It was done in Milwaukee. Bayview, I believe - houses are worth 200k+ there now.

If you google 'gentrification bayview milwaukee' you'll get 6+ years of articles bitching about how the area is becoming whiter and more affluent.

I was just going to say there is already bitching about gentrification in Detroit. Some don't understand why it became a shithole. Article talks about how the median earnings in under 30K in Detroit and those people need to be accommodated.

Ugh, it’s such a bag of mixed opinions. Detroit needs gentrification. They also need an investment into the poor communities to make them sustainable for lower income folks.

Unfortunately, our leaders have never shown an ability to get the second part done. I’m not sure what the answer is either. I hate that long-standing families get kicked to the curb, but some of those neighborhoods are so far gone that it has to be done.

Those that scream about gentrification are those that support the welfare state.

The average incomes shown for Detroit say a huge percentage of Detroit residents are sucking the government tit instead of going out and getting a job.

What those against gentrification are arguing for is keeping boarded up businesses with drug dealers, gangs and prostitutes in their neighborhoods.

What a way to live.

If you have ever been to Detroit this is a very common sight. Literally hundreds if not thousands of homes that once housed thriving middle class families that are now abandoned. The number of former houses like this in entire neighborhoods that have been razed to the ground and all that is left are concrete driveways is staggering. Detroit is showcase number one of what liberal and progressive policies can do to a city. Damn shame.

Purchasing these 3 properties for $5000.00 would cost you close to a million. There’s a development contract with the city you must sign to purchase. They’ll nickel and dime you with codes to the poor house. Then you probably have to have mixed income inhabitants. There’s all sorts of requirements and that’s before they hit you with new development property taxes. This is why the city is crumbling. Politicians are the main root cause of all of this.

Those aren't single family homes either. They are duplexes, or whatever they were called 100 years ago, and appear to have been built that way. Two front doors.

10 blocks would probably do it if heavily patrolled, but the problem in many areas has been city services.

No trash trucks or police will show up for calls due to fear or laziness.

Your trucks and building supplies will be stolen nightly and regardless of video evidence no prosecutions will be made.

City corruption is institutional. Want a permit? Better payoff the clerk or you can sit on your building for a decade and no one will care.

Detroit post race riot was the first major city outside of maybe Baltimore to just stop policing large parts of its municipality back in the mid 1960’s. It went from a middle class utopia post WW2 to a perfect example of the logical outcome for progressive policing over a generation.

Outside of city center near the sports venues Detroit proper is basically uninhabitable and the older locals will tell you they prefer this to gentrification for reasons that in the end are basically racial.
