Anyone try Surströmming?

Apparently it’s considered one of the foulest smelling foods there is...
YouTube of some Irish people trying it.

quote:
Surströmming (pronounced [²s?????rœm???]; Swedish for "sour herring") is a lightly-salted fermented Baltic Sea herring.
During the production of surströmming, just enough salt is used to prevent the raw herring from rotting. A fermentation process of at least six months gives the fish a characteristic strong smell and somewhat acidic taste. According to a Japanese study, a newly opened can of surströmming has one of the most putrid food smells in the world, stronger than similarly fermented fish dishes such as the Korean hongeohoe or Japanese kusaya.[2]

That's the only food I've seen make the Bizarre Foods guy gag.

Go to Scandinavia.
Go eat Scandinavia.
Until then, you are pussies.

Not legit. Anything can be "food" if you're brave enough.

There is an Asian fruit that is pretty much banned from eating in public because it's smell is so putrid.
And that says a lot if you've smelled some real Asian food.

Durian fruit?
I think the LA Beast (YouTube) tried to eat one.

I believe that's it
Supposed to make you puke from smelling it and people are eating it
That's a no for me, dog.

This popped up on my suggested videos - Irish people try Coco Loco Snuff. Apparently it’s a chocolate that you sniff like a drug.
ETA - Hum ... looks like the FDA has since banned this.

It attracted media attention after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for snortable chocolate products sold in the United States to be investigated.

That's it baw. I ate some in the Philippines. It is pretty good. The travel guides say it tastes like vanilla pudding. Not really, but it is good. It does stink but nowhere near like rotten fish.

It's just about the nastiest food on the planet. Think about it: canned sardines, or herring, that have soured to a degree the can is about to burst!
The only other food in the world the exhibits a funk to a level approaching surströmming is hakarl, which ironically, is another fish product from Scandinavia. It's an Icelandic delicacy made from fermented Greenlandic shark which is caught usu. in the late summer, buried underground for months, and dredged up in the following spring and processed into cube-shaped nuggets. I've never tried it but it's said to have a mild, nutty flavor like Swiss cheese. The problem is its aroma: it combines the putrid stench of rotten eggs with a suffocating reek of smelling salts!

Durian is wonderful, if you can cut through its pronounced fecal fragrance.

I have tried it, and did not enjoy it. My 13 year old son ate the whole can.

Have some friends from Sweden who come over about once a year. They bring shite like this here for us to try. I’ve never tried it though. I have tried the black vodka they bring. It’s fricking horrible and thusly been renamed Black Death.

The food that other cultures eat is pretty awful for the most part, especially if you’re American because our diet is so based on a sweet flavor. We load everything up with sodium and sugar.
Even the restaurants here that are Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, etc aren’t real foods you get over there. It’s americanized to the point it’s not even close to the same
