STAY AWAY from ambien. You forget everything you do on it and at the same time it puts you in a zombie like state which removes any and all inhibitions. You'll do things you regret. I've been on it myself and also another person very close to me. Other than doing some really weird shite on it I got off of it okay. The other person started to drink while on it and didn't remember doing it, also taking car rides with no memory of it. This progressed over months until she was finally found wrecked in a ditch while on it and while drunk. Thankfully she was okay, and has gotten off of ambien, but she now has a drinking problem that is causing major issues in her life. She hardly drank at all before this and certainly never alone.

I've taken Ambien for several years now. I never realized I had a problem until one night I ended up at Sonic and bought 3 footlong coney hot dogs, complete with all the processed cheese fixin's and jalepenos and a bunch of other random Sonic crap. The good news is I made it home safely and didn't hurt anyone on the road.
Sadly, it wasn't waking up to this realization that scared me straight. It was what I did after eating all the Sonic garbage. I watched 3 back to back episodes of Steven Segal, Lawman.
That's a shame spiral I still haven't recovered from.

Get her to find a solution for sleep apnea. There are other masks, nose pieces, mouth pieces, surgeries. You'd rather drug yourself and have her slowly kill herself?

Still think my favorite ambien story was from another thread where a guy said he ate everything in his pantry and then ran down the street in just his boxers growling like a wolf. Would love to walk out of my house and witness something like that

You let her frick you with a strap on while taking Ambien, didn't you?

I woke up one morning with the milk in the pantry and cereal box in fridge...probably the most tame of my experiences.
Had a buddy who put a frozen pizza in the oven upside down. Feel asleep while it was cooking and woke up to a smoke detector, house full of smoke and one hell of a mess in the oven.

1) she needs the CPAP unless the MD OKs her being off it. This is off topic, but it's the most important part of your post.
2) melatonin 5mg 1 HR before sleep. It's over the counter. read the bottle. Can safely go up to 10mg. If that's ineffective, unisom is similarly effective and easy. If the problem is her snoring, a nice pair of ear plugs is probably the best answer.
There's a lot of danger associated with stronger sleep meds. Namely, their effect lasts on you until morning, even lunchtime. Dependence is a normal occurrence. And after the age of 65, it's associated with an increased risk of falls- one of the leading causes of morbidity. Thus, the move up to ambien is generally recommended to be last-ditch in someone who isn't having problems with their daily life due to lack of sleep.
That's the academic answer. You can probably get ambien from most doctors. But try the OTC stuff and ear plugs first for your own, long-term health.

Ambien is great for insomnia but if not addictive is certainly habit forming. I was on it for about two years and managed to get myself off it a few months ago. Certainly don't recommend it for your situation.

All I can say is CPAP is awful to get used to. I couldn't do it and would try Benadryl or Zquill first. If that doesn't work, be very careful with Ambien and such drugs. A month or two on Ambien was a Godsend however, there came a time where I started to become dependent on it and it made me horribly moody and forgetful, amongst some other side effects. I could see the wrong reaction on this drug could be very scary.
I got switched to Lunesta but it left a horrible metallic taste in my mouth and had to go another path.
I have found that raising my head with pillows has worked sufficiently but takes a few nights to get used to. The next step was a movable type bed frame that will raise my side of the bed while the wife stays flat. I have found that you can find a high end mattress place that will let you try this for free for a few days but you'll pay a premium for the end product if you use this kind of service. You also might need decent credit for it even to be an option. I'm sure I could have negotiated better but I was desperate and it worked out for me because my wife didn't require that I change the Icomfort mattress. She can sleep at the
angle that makes me comfortable/ not choke on my own breath. Our next purchase is to buy separate mattresses that will allow us to use the bed frame to it's fullest extent.
Good luck, this is an unpleasant thing to get right. I'm a firm believer that all solutions that aren't drugs should be tried because no pill will offer you a permanent solution as far as I'm concerned. For those that disagree about the pill route, please consider taking a few nights off and report back your results.

<--- Ambien taker here. Been on it for about a decade. Best sleep aid I've found. I take it about an hour before bed, and I sleep through thunderstorms, crying kids, and wife's bathroom trips. I wake up quickly and most days don't even need coffee. Heed the warnings about staying up after taking it though. I was working in Mississippi for a few months, and one night I took meds early, stayed up, and ultimately made a round trip home to LA before going into work the next day.

I want to add that people should not take antihistamines/anticholinergic meds(benadryl, z quill, unisom, etc) long term because it has been linked to irreversible cognitive impairment.
Here's an article about the study's findings:
LINK
Here's a link to the different meds and their respective risk ratings(1-3, 3 being the highest risk).:
