Sleep aides are highly individual dependent. There isn't any science to figuring it out, you just have to see what works for you.

The poster that said you should work through the OTC and homeopathic remedies before going to the RX level drugs is absolutely correct.

I was the medical provider to a large team of guys who travelled extensively and had to work strange hours. I had some that loved Ambien, some that it didn't work on at all. I had one guy who slept like the dead with a single tablet of diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and another for whom Melatonin was the best drug. For me, Melatonin gives a hang over like I drank a bottle of Jack so it is a no-go. It all just depends.

But Ambien and the other RX meds are VERY habit forming and potentially dangerous (incidences of sleep activities without recall) so keep that in mind.

Equate sleep aid. Its 50 mg of Diphenhydramine (benadryl)

Kicks in about 2 hours after I take it and helps put me to sleep.

I wake up feeling fine , unlike if I were to take regular benadryl. That shite leaves me groggy the next day.

You don't have to be overweight to have sleep apena. Weight has zero to do with it.

Sleep meds do NOT produce sleep, they produce unconsciousness.

While these companies might try to say they don't alter sleep architecture, they most certainly do. You won't get the same restorative effects of real sleep.

IMO, I'd rather sleep in another room if I had to.

She should not quit the machine, look for another solution.

Provigil(Modafinil) is used for sleep apnea and works really well. It's a stimulant you take during the day but it causes your breathing to be more regular at night.

I prefer to solve/fix problems naturally as opposed to medicating myself so I can make it thru a day the easy way while majorly f'ing up my body and mind long term.

This is your answer. You're looking to medicate yourself to attenuate the side effects of your wife's condition. This is akin to turning up the radio when your car starts making strange noises.

5 mg of melatonin works great. And very little groggy feeling in the morning.

Don't let her quit the cpap! She just needs to convince herself that it is helping both her and you. People that have problems with the masks WANT to have problems with the mask.

Is it a pain the arse occasionally? Absolutely! That is still a far better problem than her practically fighting for her life dozens of times a night. If she was diagnosed with sleep apnea it was for more than just snoring.

Back to your question though. You really just have to try different meds. Most of the OTC sleep "aids" are all the same thing as Benadryl. My wife was prescribed Ambien and said it did nothing for her. I decided to try it and 10 mg worked like a charm for me. But like someone else said... don't take it until you are going to bed. I took a dose one night and watched TV downstairs for about 30 minutes. I could barely drag myself up the stairs to bed. Seriously I was like I was drunk AF and the wall was holding me up.

Try zma with theanine. Works like a charm for me and has added health benefits. That or just take a hit or two of some quality bud about an hour and a half before bed.

Ambien is perfect for me. Sleep 8 hours easy and no horrible dreams, sleepwalking, headaches after waking,e to. It is as if it was designed for me. Started with 10mg and break them in 3rds now. So 3-4 mg works well. Talk to your doc.

I know everyone is just trying to help, but none of these solutions are likely to help him ignore the freight train in his bed.

He doesn't have issues sleeping, just sleeping through his wife's apnea.

She's gotta get back on the CPAP (or a modified version), or sleep in another room.

ambien works.

side effects from hell. most people do fine.
read up on it so you know what to look for. they won't happen day one.

be sure she lies down within a few minutes of taking it.

I think if she can use it to get a good night sleep two nights a week during the week and Saturday night, she can escape the side effects.

Sleep meds aren't for people who can sleep fine on their own but are otherwise kept awake by outside stimulants. Try earmuffs.

BOSE is my friend.

Trazadone is premier. Just be sure to eat first. not on empty stomach, EVER.
it will cut your stomach like a laser.

I have used Ambien and Trazadone. they both work.
Ambien has side effects for me. SEVERAL.

You are correct. I normally sleep fine. It is the sounds of a banshee being born without any skin lying next to me that keeps me awake and wakens me. I do want her to continue to use it for medical reasons but she is against it. Swallows a ton of air, causes gastric pressure, drying of nasal passages and creates sores, lines on face...she really hates it.

The " other room" option is not good. I do not think this is good for a marriage. Plus, 4 bedroom house with 3 kids....so no extra room. Prior back surgery makes the couch a very non-appealing option.

I have a 3PM appt with my doctor to discuss. I really appreciate all of the feedback and am very impressed at how serious everyone took this thread. Absent a stupid comment that my 120lb wife should lose weight....this is probably the most mature TD thread I have seen in a while.

My wife has a prescription of Ambien that she only takes when she has to work a night shift because she doesn't sleep well during the day.

I have a prescription of Lunesta that works very well when I know I need to sleep well. I also have sleep apnea with a CPAP machine and also some kind of dental fitted mouthpiece thing when I can't use the CPAP machine.

Ambien will help for awhile, and give you some of the best sleep you've had since you were a kid, but after awhile it got to where I was only getting 4 hrs of sleep with them. They don't make you loopy the next AM like benadryl does me. Ambien also has some bad side effects like sleepwalking, sleep cooking, sleep driving, etc.

If Lorcets make you loopy the next day you sound like s feather weight (probably the meds they gave you to sedate you for the medical procedure or phenergen to keep said meds from making you nauseous that's having an effect on you the next day.

Regardless. I would suggest starting out with Melatonin to help you. It won't knock you out like Ambien, but it will help you stay asleep and no hangover the next day. Just prepare for some crazy dreams.

Or you could get that sleep nber bed they have been advertising where the husband falls asleep and is snoring and the wife raises his head up until he stops snoring and then she falls asleep and wakes him up with her snoring so he turns her number up raising her head up until she stops snoring and he can fall back asleep. I'm sure the Ned works IRL just like it does on the commercial.

Melatonin is not the best thing to take. It will prevent you body from naturally making melatonin.

That happens naturally as your body gets older anyway, thus the need to supplement your body's production.
