No AC in our home until age 10, and lived south of Houston, had one swamp cooler and attic fan. Went through 12 years of grade school in classrooms with no AC. Grandparents in central LA never had in their homes AC.

Have it and the last few days it will NOT shut off. Running constantly. Can't wait to see my bill.

I made it all the way through high school without A/C. Back then you just opened the windows and they had a big free standing fan that circulated air in the classrooms.

The only places that had A/C back then were the offices and teacher's lounge area.

This is true. Average high in central Louisiana in July was only 79 degrees as recently as 1980.

The "average" high for La. last year was 81.1 degrees and the average low was 75 in the summer months. That takes into account all of La. and not just central La.

Our family didn't have air conditioning until I was 15 years old. You slept by an open window with an attic fan drawing air through the window. I managed to survive.

PS: This was in Bogalusa so the attic fan drew paper mill miasma through the window.

Not my entire childhood, but about 5 years of it was spent with nothing but an attic fan. No AC in Louisiana can build character for sure.
I’ll never forget when my parents bought a window unit for their bedroom. I slept on their floor for years after until we moved to a place with central AC.

No AC for me until after I graduated high school and got my own apartment, a year later my folks had AC and my sister was thrilled, LOL!

Didn't have A/C until I was in high school. We had windows and an attic fan.

My grandma's house didn't have central AC.

Not sure when central AC became standard but her house was built in the early-70s, so it wasn't one of the older pier and beam houses with high ceilings and transoms. It was a small ranch-style slab house with an attic fan for use during the summer months.

My dad got her to install a window AC unit in her living room sometime in the mid-80s but she'd raise hell whenever someone tried to turn it on.

i mean it is pretty well understood that you "get used to" the heat. So if you lived and worked with only fans and windows, you can get by. But when everything is A/Ced......

my grandma. she was super frugal on spending. her house was real old and huge and didnt have central air. she just had a window unit in the kitchen/livingroom she would run for a few hours each evening but that was about it. she would sleep with the windows open at night with a fan.
