I remember my friend having a condo in Albuquerque with no AC but he had an attic fan. The fan worked great keeping it cool but they also have extremely low humidity. This was in the mid 90s also.

Not sure if it is a shame these disappeared or not. Have debated installing one several times.

We have one.

We don’t use it in the summers but those mild spring and fall days, it is great with a window or two open during the day.

Grandparents only had window unit in the living room. Bedrooms were open windows and fans. I was told not to let the bedroom fan blowing directly on me at night or else I would wake up with my face paralyzed.

I don’t remember being hot at night and miss sleeping on the feather bed they had.

ETA: this was the South Louisiana marsh.

North La. My grandparents didn't have AC and we stayed with them quite a bit. They had a big built in fan in the ceiling of their hallway. It kept things tolerable

My house was built in 1922, and the first occupants never had AC. The widow of that couple lived here until the 70s or early 80s and had no AC.

No AC in our home, our school, our church, or our car. We had an attic fan in our house that helped a lot on most nights. But you better not be running around working up a sweat right before you went to bed. If you were you would wake up in a puddle of sweat. Some nights it was pretty difficult to get to sleep but you would wake up in the middle of the night looking for a sheet. Notice I said sheet, not a comforter.

If you look at pictures of many of the old homes in Louisiana most were built with shade trees all around them. High ceilings and big windows everywhere to catch the breeze helped out too. Living in a modern sub division with no shade at all and today’s house design would be unbearable with no a/c but living in an old style home could be done.

I’ve gone a couple weeks without it. It wasn’t really that bad but it was in early May before it really starts getting hot hear. I get cold pretty easy though, 72-75 is where I usually keep my thermostat.

Yep and the porch that went around the house was there to keep the sun of the side of the house and give you a place to sit until the house cooled off at night.

We didn’t have A/C till I was probably 10ish.

Attic fan and fireplace was all we had.

Me. We had an attic fan which didn’t do crap. I used to take a cold shower before bed and have the fan blow on me while I tried to sleep.

This is true. Average high in central Louisiana in July was only 79 degrees as recently as 1980

Is this true?

Bad insulation here. So if it got to 96 degrees outside in the dead of summer, it got to like a humid 90 degrees with the AC running.

Winter got pretty unbearable as well. If it got to 30 degrees outside, it got to 20 degrees inside, although the heater helped more in winter than the AC in summer
