I’ve heard homes had something called swamp fans to help with the heat but I can’t imagine it helped too much on days like today. I realize a person can’t really miss what they never had but being hot is being hot. How did y’all manage?

And no our summers now aren’t any hotter than they were then due to global warming so let’s just get that out of the way.

We had a/c but my dad used it as little as possible. Went to sleep many a night to the sound of an attic fan and watching the curtains flap from an open window.

Most of the trash here didn't know what air-conditioning was until the first time they walked into they're Foreman's trailer.

I didn't but my paw paw did. He said they'd open the windows and they had fans but it was still hot. They lived on a dirt road and he said everything would get covered in dust when the random two or three cars passed per day.

I grew up in a house that had a window unit in the living room, and one in my parents room. Parents did not run the ac even half of the time.
Had a box fan in my bedroom.

No AC from age 8 to 18. Something called an attic fan and screen doors. Was not pleasant but made me who I am and still had things way better than a whole lot of people in this world.

Not sure if it is a shame these disappeared or not.

Have debated installing one several times.

I couldn't imagine living in this shite hole in the 1800s and early 1900s.

We got our first air conditioner when I was about ten years old. It was cool.

It wasn't that bad back then, global warming has made it much worse.

I grew up in an old shotgun house in the Lower 9th Ward and all we had for moving air in the summer was an old 36" Reed window fan mounted in the last room of the house. That fan had 2 speeds and blew in 2 directions, either into the house or out to suck air through open windows in other parts of the house.

We always had it blowing out to pull air into other open windows. I never had an A/C in any house I lived in until 78 when my then wife was pregnant for our son. She told me if I didn't get A/C she was heading back to live with mama-----------should have let her go then instead of 6 years later.

Once you get A/C, you're spoiled.

If I lived before AC I would have had to move out of the South.

Had an attic fan

Eventually got a window unit, living room, and bedroom was on other end of the house, would run down the hall with pillow, place on the blowing cold air and back down the hall, top bunk.

Use to bust my rear on the A/C condensation, in the driveway

This is true. Average high in central Louisiana in July was only 79 degrees as recently as 1980.
