In the last two years or so I think 3 people I went to high school with have killed themselves. I think 2 or 3 more OD'ed. Different reasons you hear for the suicides from losing jobs (GP shutting down) to substance issues.

Yes. appears to be an uptick around here. My 7 y/o daughter's best friend's mother committed suicide a few weeks ago. My daughter knew the mom well and now can't even see her best friend anymore because of all the life changes afterward.
Several others in the area recently too, more than usual it seems.
EDIT: Also, if you ever talk to police in a town with busy rail roads, I'm willing to bet you'll find out there are a LOT more suicides than make the news. Apparently just a block from my house, the tracks are a very popular spot for teens to kill themselves. The police and media make an intentional effort to not report these incidents and keep them quiet. They say it is to prevent glorifying the acts but I feel like the public is being blinded to how big of a problem this is. This leads to not enough parents addressing the topic sooner with their kids.

I don’t know that they’re happening more often, or if it’s that it has become more acceptable to talk about them. Last week, my daughter told me a seventh grader at her school killed himself because “life was too hard”. Sad as hell.

Massive increase in opiate addiction is one reason. People really feel like they are in hopeless situation due to the vicious cycle of scoring just to remain from getting sick.

Internet+drugs=depression which leads to suicidal tendencies.
Outward Bound could have saved a lot of these people from themselves. That’s what it’s there for. If you want to kill yourself, take a couple of months to go clear your mind in the PNW.

I agree with most that we may just be hearing about these more often than in the passed.
Everyone has down moments in their life but in my opinion there is so much to be thankful for in this life. We have it SO much better than most of the people in this world. Whenever I have bad days it's just good to take a count of all the good things you got in your life, family, friends, a home, etc. I don't think I could ever get to a point where suicide was a solution to my problems.
I don't want this taken the wrong way but I've always seen suicide as one of the most selfish things a person can do. The burden and guilt you leave behind on your family and friends I would never want to wish that upon anyone

This does not surprise me. I don’t really notice a bunch of truly happy people walking about these days. It’s as if society in general keeps trying to fill a hole with everything except the dirt that goes in holes, and not really truly happy in their lives. Whatever it is, it would not surprise me if the numbers of suicides are greater than they’ve been. We all put on our masks to go out in public, but what’s behind the mask only the one wearing it truly knows.

I can't account for the young suicides.
I've had a theory for a long time about older guys.
Put yourself in the year 850 in a Baltic country.
You are 35 with a nagging pain.
Your tribal leader calls for the tribe to migrate to east Anglia, which is occupied by Celtic tribes. During the battle you decide it's time to end the pain. I think that happened. Right up to 1918 at least.

Suicide is a silent epidemic that no one wants to talk about. Until the stigma is gone and people are willing to talk about mental health nothing will change.

This I agree with, but I don't know if addiction to drugs and the internet is a product of a triggered depressive cycle and contributes to a downward spiral or if the drugs and internet start the downward spiral by allowing a disconnect from reality.
I think the depression sets in deepest when people believe that the real world challenges are less appealing than being drug impaired or living fake and vicariously through social media and meaningless "likes," and when they realize social media is meaningless and real life has already lost it value/appeal, that's when they end it.
My sister battles severe depression and addiction to opiates and social media crap. Its basically an impossible situation at this point and I wait everyday for that phone call. She's been through medical inpatient rehab a few times, but my parents always enable her and are pawns in her depressive cycles because she's smarter than both of them combined, or maybe just more manipulative.

"Died by suicide" would be the correct term. Please stop using the phrase "Committed suicide." There's plenty of info on the web regarding using the correct terms while talking about suicide.

I think it snowballs - the more people hear about it happening the more suicide becomes an option to ease the pain. Attended two suicide related funerals in 2018 - hoping for none this year.

Very true. Talking about your depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts is a sing of strength not weakness. I know that is very hard for people to understand but if the message of strength is used more maybe some good can be done.

Yes, my sister committed suicide. She had suffered from depression for years and years. I don't think she go the proper medication or therapy she needed. But I truly think she got to a point where things were good in her life, she had everything going for her, and she was still just miserable. So she wanted the pain to end. It sucks for us that are left, but I can't say I blame her. I can't imagine living every day being that miserable.
