I try to take on a summer intern every year. It’s a great way to give a promising student some much needed work experience. And I don’t have to make my own coffee for a few months.

I thought about trying to ensure he communicates with as many people as possible, that may be the biggest thing that gets him a job out here.

absolutely correct...that is always a priority when I have an intern.

Actually no, but the last two always made me a cup when they made theirs, so I wasn’t going to turn it down

Your boss smells weakness on you so he’s testing the two of you to see who is the alpha. My guess is the intern costs you your job by the end of July

Ive mentored quite a few. Im assuming youre also an engineer.

If you work in a plant, the first thing I always do is take them in the plant and show them what the real shite looks like. he's used to seeing silly little symbols on paper. Nobody ever did that for me and I always felt stupid not knowing what was what.

I think its good to challenge the a little more than you think. Give him some modeling, let him propose a design if there is something available, give him a problem that you havent had time to fix, let him write an MOC, participate in a hazard review, and do some menial calcs.

Basically just try to remember what it was like when you were his age and help him become a good engineer

Be happy he isn't a she or your nuts and job would count on you doing more than her while she reaps the reward.

He’s a Sr in mech eng, so I think he’s just looking for a job. Maybe I should just give him normal calcs and easy things to excel at.

What do you do? Is this in a plant, eng firm, or some other type environment?

He’s a Sr in ME. Chances are he’s not a dumbass. Give him real shite to do if you don’t have anything right now. DO NOT GIVE HIM BS BUSY WORK ALL SUMMER. You can give him some simple things to complete right now, but you need to come up with a project or task for him to focus on and complete. Something that maybe you don’t have time to do that would make your life (or someone else in the work) easier.

If it’s plant work, a simple field project is great. Something like rerouting some piping, or modifying a pump. If office based, something detailed like developing a strategy for something (we had an intern research and develop a strategy for non-metallic piping, something we generally ignored). Or an excel/access/program based work. Rerating Equipment, doing brittle fracture analysis, developing a detailed bolted joint analysis, etc. If it’s more engineering firm, developing a project specification for an order.
