Sprung this shite on me Friday...gotta dude sitting in my cube all summer and I have to develop a project he can pitch at the end. I’m guessing this is punishment, while the manager acts like it’s a compliment.

I’ll basically do the project and have him pitch it, I guess. I asked him about it and he said he’d never heard about that part of the internship. I gave him some papers to review on the theory, but in three days he’s had zero questions.

I’m torn between giving him normal work 80% of the time and having him actually run the models and do the project. I mentioned that he could publish a paper on it, but he didn’t say anything. He’s a Sr in mech eng, so I think he’s just looking for a job. Maybe I should just give him normal calcs and easy things to excel at.

IDK, anyone else handle one of these?

Part of the settlement is that I'm not supposed to mention it.

Yes, but it turned out great. He was a go-getter and ended up working at the company later on. I also was able to teach him, which in turn helped me as well.
I do realize that I may be in the minority here.

yep...it is just basically a babysitting gig, but at the end, you will have to tell them whether he is worth hiring upon graduation.

If there are any field aspects to the project, I would get him involved in some of that so that he can learn the basics. The summer is only a couple of months long and that is not much time to learn about a project.

Just help the guy out and quit bitching

I’m sure you’d hope for someone to help your children out if they needed it

They didn’t give him full site access, which I can understand, but it puts me escorting him.

I thought about trying to ensure he communicates with as many people as possible, that may be the biggest thing that gets him a job out here.

I just don’t know how to read the situation or the intern. I don’t know how or why they matched him to me.

Interns are free labor. Assign him busy work and a project he can complete. Your role is to kick the tires not cross the Saharan

you are being tested for leadership growth potential. The intern is being evaluated for suitability as a permanent hire

Many.

Give them an easy job with a relatively quick (but perfectly reasonable) deadline. See if they get it done well and on time. If they don’t, take them out to lunch a few times but otherwise ignore them. If they do, give them something a bit more involved. Rinse and repeat.

Summer will be done before you know it.

Just picture yourself in his shoes. He probably doesn’t know shite so try to teach him as much as you can. An internship where people just assign busy work and let the intern do his own thing is pointless. He’s there to try and learn as much as possible and hopefully come out with a job offer. I know it seems like a punishment, but help the dude out and he will appreciate it.
