Ward could end up doing the full 40 years without the benefit of parole. With Williams leading the prosecution, he could ask for the full 40 years without parole.
No more 85%? It’s flat time now for a first offense crime of violence?

I set the over under at 10 years. If he gets under 10, he did damn good.
He’ll more likely get at least 25. Wouldn’t surprise me if gets 40.

Nola court system and given the circumstances I agree. They won't want to be seen as letting him off lightly. I'll say 25-35.

I say he gets 15 and does 5-6

Why? Because he's a college educated white guy with no record? I think that works against him here.

Kind of agree. He made a terrible decision while blackout drunk and fought someone, and a guy died a few weeks later. He deserves to be in jail.
But he didn’t actively search out a gang rival and blast away with no regards for anyone in the area, or carjack someone, or drive by murder someone driving on I-10. And those seem to be the types of crimes that get charges dropped or sentences decreased in NOLA.

I'm thinking/hoping that the DA goes for 25 with no early release/parole

That’s not possible in Louisiana.
Any aggravated crime , such as manslaughter requires 85% of the sentence completed. The getting out, “on good behavior “ ,thing you hear is just the other 15% of the sentence
That other 15% is served on parole

How much do you think attorney fees are for a case like his? It has to be at least 50k maybe even close to 100? How do law firms offer payment plans? I could not imagine his family still having to pay the fees every month while they will likely never see their son outside of prison ever again.

Every criminal defense attorney is different regarding fees. Some guys would take a murder case for $15k, others $100k. Some will take a down payment with monthly payments, others lump sum up front. The risk for the attorney is not getting enough money up front and then not being able to withdraw from the case for nonpayment. And the attorney can forget ever getting paid any balance owing after the trial. Even if he wins the trial, forget it. Criminal clients have little concern for honoring contractual obligations.
If it’s early enough in the case, the attorney can usually withdraw for nonpayment but it really depends on the judge. Judges often don’t care if an attorney is stuck working for free. Late in the case, forget it. The attorney is stuck working for free.

His sentencing is coming up soon. How many years do you think his sentence will be?

Do you think that the DA would have tried the case personally if Ward was a 29 yr old black man? We'd have never even heard about it or it would have been a blip on the 3rd page of the paper.

Anyone heard the sentence yet? Was supposed to be today but still nothing in news.

Does Ward have any shot at acquittal since he woke up with a knife pointed at him?
Hell yeah he does, especially if surveillance video exists proving what he alleges happened or depending on what witness testimony is presented, or even consideration of the past criminal history of the "victim." If the "victim" has an m.o. or armed robberies--especially while armed with a knife--in his criminal history, past criminal offenses could be presented as evidence. Contrary to what many would have us believe in todays society ravaged by white supremacist violence against minorities, dudes that look like Ward aren't usually wandering into New Orleans to violently attack poor innocent black folk.

He was a tourist, drunk in New Orleans?!

If a POS tried to rob me with a deadly weapon and I socked him and dropped him, I'd probably throw in a couple kicks to the head too.
