Not including those of you who are skinheads, does anyone use trimmers to cut your own hair? Can you accomplish a fade? How do you cut the top, which for me would be "finger length," as I tell the barber?

How'd you learn?

Yeah. When I was four. Just before I was ring bearer in my uncle's wedding. My mom almost killed me.

been cutting my own hair for years. I am mostly bald, so it really isnt that big of a deal. My oldest daughter is a beautician, but I still cut my own hair.

So many questions.
Yes I can accomplish a fade.
Depends on the style for the top, got a good pair of hair cutting scissors.. finger length trim.
Watch YouTube, treat it like woodworking. Better to cut it long and have to come back versus cutting it too short.
Most important rule is remember it is just hair and that it will grow back and know that if you screw it up bad enough, you have to be willing to shave it all and start from scratch.

if you want the same length all over, you just use the appropriate spacer. my clippers have an angled spacer to do the fade with, but I don't use that.

What is it...a 4 guard, then fade it to a 1 or 2 & blend for fingers length?

Btw, shaving with no guard at all doesn't give you a skinhead look- you would need to use no guard/clippers, then a razor blade for the rest. W/ a good hairline, a no-guard shave isn't a bad look

Trial by error...

I've done it before.

Cut it with a #7 guard all over. Then I used a #3 on the bottom and transitioned to a #4, #5, and #6 all the way up to get rid of the lines.

I then took all the guards off and shaped up my sideburn and ear area.

Then I was able to angle the clippers just right to shape up the sides of my neck.

Then I used a belt and held it against my neckline and used that to make a straight line on the back of my neck.

Came out pretty decent actually. I did it just as a challenge because I said I bet I could do it and some friends said no way.

It just takes a long time. It probably took me 45 minutes to do what a barber could have done in 10.
