I’m so tired but can’t sleep. When I try my mind races on all kind of shite that I worry about. Some nights are worse then others. I think tonight will be a long night

Not since I started back drinking...

I have in the past and occasionally do now. More rare though.
What’s your diet like? Are you drinking enough water? Cutting off fatty food at least 4 hours before bed? Reducing sugar intake?
Are you drinking alcohol in the evenings? Caffeine? How much blue light (phones, TV, computer screens) are you exposed to before bed? How much time do you give yourself before bed to wind down and get ready to sleep?
Are you stressed about anything? Maybe not physically...simply have any stressors?
You’d be surprised to know how easy it is to fix insomnia.

Stress is my biggest problem. When I try to sleep all my problems I’m having just plays over and over in my head

That’s the worst kind of insomnia to have. If it was diet related, you’d just eat or drink differently. Can’t always eliminate stress.
There are some strategies to help with stress though. Yoga is a good one. I prefer running. Exercise can tire you to the point that you sleep and also release endorphins in your brain that alleviate the intensity of stress.
Some people have success journaling or making a list of their stressors before getting into bed. That way they’ve articulated their stress without allowing their imagination to start rambling about them while laying in bed.

If I drink some beers or whiskey I sleep fine, if I don’t I stay up until I have to get up... which is scary at 22

I do. I would worry about having to wake up at a certain time, and thinking “if I don’t go to bed now I’ll only get 4 hours of sleep tonight.” That really fricked me up and brought on a lot of general anxiety.
I started to eat a little better and take magnesium supplements. I guess it helped. I can more or less make my own hours for work so I have just decided that I will go to sleep whenever and wake up whenever. Now I usually go to bed around 3 and wake up around 9. That has worked wonders.

Not one of which you will solve laying in bed in the middle of the night. I get that every once in a while and just try to focus on that fact and usually drift off.

sleepio was recently recommended by a medical lecture series I subscribe to.
It is behavioral therapy for your sleep.
A fairly large amount of insomnia responds to behavioral changes.
It does cost money. I'm not sure how much, but it supposed to be pretty well worth it if you take their little quiz and it thinks it can help you.
I have no personal success stories from it and receive no benefits for mentioning it. But in a digital day and age, it is a cool tool that I plan on using when I find someone willing to try it.
