Doesn’t Don Henley (Eagles) own a bunch of land in that area

Closer to the state line on Caddo Lake. Cass County, I think.

Lot of money in Tyler, but it’s a nice area. Mahomes is from Whitehouse, right outside of Tyler.

I lived in Tyler for about eight years..
Took a job there and planned on retiring there..( got me close to my parents in bossier as their health was declining)

Lived in the azalea district…loved the area….I like historic houses…lived on azalea trail… lots of other subdivision..nice.. depends on what you want..schools etc…

When I retired I decided it was not the place for me..

Lots of pros and cons.. I will say most young people move out not in…

Ask specific questions and I will respond …
It depends on what you are looking for in a lifestyle…

I'm partial to Longview, but Tyler is a nice town with everything you really need. If you don't mind a drive there are some smaller towns around it that are nice too (Kilgore, Lindale, Jacksonville, Troup, etc.)

Btw
I have had houses in Houston … Baton Rouge and Tyler ( along with other places)…
… the only house I came home to and my back door had been kicked in and house run through… yup Tyler.. also chased a guy out of my garage as he was trying to break into my car one evening .. I came back from making groceries and was putting groceries in fridge and my dog saw him as she was on the back porch.. we had problems with people following people back and snatching purses etc when they got home and where unloading…

I mention this because everyone brings it up so much about br…crime is everywhere… people get desperate…life happens….

I lived in a nice area … old school .. you would recognize the names of my neighbors……

I grew up in Tyler. It's a good place to raise a family but there is frick all to do aside from the few lakes in the area. It was always funny to me that people from the surrounding area would come in to see the "big city" when all I ever wanted was to get the hell up to Dallas.

If you end up in Kilgore check out Country Tavern for it's ribs. If you are in Tyler go to Stanley's BBQ.

Yeah but the 903 covers a big area, so there are people from East Mountain who think Tyler is huge

This is the most important advice given so far…Stanley’s is solid ….a while back and the new owners had the original owner teach them all the cooking first.. then they brought in more bands etc to expand it beyond just a bbq place… get a brother in law sandwich….the tavern was a bar that served food and turned into a very every good bbq place.. ribs are on par to mine …:)… I wish…theirs are special……we drove from Tyler to the tavern …it was worth the drive… and you can stop at the only porn drive through theater I am aware of ( Apache I think) on the way back to town …

903 is a weird area code. It's in Tyler but it's also all the way up in Sherman which is like a 2 1/2 hour drive northwest.

If u ask someone from that area where they're from, most say east Texas. You have to ask them what city. Very strange. They love being from east Texas.

Lived just outside Kilgore once upon a time and really liked it. Has just enough facilities where you didn't have to go to Tyler or Longview for basics.

Sort of depends 9n what you do for entertainment though. If occasional night out and hunting/fishing is your thing it is great. If clubbing is your weekend you will be disappointed.

Some damn good HS football around there. Carthage, Marshall, Kilgore has been state Champs a couple times. Even small towns like Gilmer are putting out div. I players.

My wife's family has some land in Tyler, we go there frequently.

We just had a wedding on the land last month. Catered by Stanley's BBQ. Go to Stanley's for live music, get a mother-clucker cadillac style.

I enjoy it very much in Tyler. It's like taking a break from the bullshite of Louisiana. I definitely can see myself moving there later on in life. Can't right now because of work.

I worked in that area for years. Unfortunately there are almost no roses anymore.(I was in the horticultural industry)

It is considered one of the most desirable areas in TX to live. Tyler has amenities, plenty of nice countryside, nearby lakes for fishing, boating, good schools, very reasonable cost of living and truly conservative. You could do a lot worse.
Good luck.

Longview and Tyler are both nice towns and both are growing steadily like most decent towns in Texas. Both have good public school systems, especially elementary/middle schools, Longview High is large and has a strong athletic program and competes for State Championships in football often, Hallsville High just outside Longview is one of the most sought after districts to live in and great school, town of 4,000 with the school having almost 6000 students so a large, more rural school district. Tyler has some good high schools and a couple of good junior colleges.
Several good golf courses in the Longview/Tyler area if you golf, lots of good lakes within close drive distance for fishing, boating, water sports and camping. I’m not familiar with bar or club scene but there are some good places to eat scattered around the area.
Tyler has probably 115,000 residents, Longview probably 85,000, Kilgore is pretty small, probably less than 15,000 but lots of old money in the area, was once the oil production capital of Texas and has multiple working oil wells inside the city limits.

It really depends on where your job will be located, if it’s actually in Tyler you probably should consider housing in the immediate Tyler area, I really haven’t been around Kilgore much but I would probably chose to live in Longview, Tyler, Hallsville or Henderson, simply due to schools, closeness to conveniences and property resale value. Tyler is further than I’d want to drive from Longview on a daily basis, if you live on the north or east side of Longview and drive to the south or west side of Tyler it’s 45 to 60 minutes.
The real estate market is hot in most of East Texas and new construction in good neighborhoods is currently in the $200-240 sq ft and higher in some areas. Land prices are high compared to most of Louisiana, Texas doesn’t have hold state income tax like La. but has property taxes that are becoming unreasonable and the county reassesses value and raises those taxes EVERY year. For example, a $500,000 home on half an acre in Longview will run close to $800 or more a month compared to a house of that value in Bossier City about $375 so taxes are at least double.
If the job is actually in Tyler, you could consider Henderson, Jacksonville or some of the smaller towns like Whitehorse, Lindale, Canton or others. if you plan eventually to have children in school, there are a lot of good choices and unfortunately that’s something I couldn’t really say when I lived in Louisiana.
