I have a company in the Kilgore/Longview area that I will be interviewing with.

I’ve never been to the area so I don’t have any real experience with it, no family or friends there either.

Is it a good place to live?
For reference, me and the wife are about to start a family, live in BR currently. Aren’t looking for anything crazy but a decent sized town and somewhere safe.
Can’t imagine it being any worse than BR…

Any thoughts?

One of the state’s best BBQ restaurants is in Tyler. Stanley’s. At a minimum, you should eat there after your interview.

I don’t live there but do a good bit of work there. I guess the question really is what are you looking for.
1) Kilgore is a really different atmosphere than Tyler so will you be closer to kilgore or Tyler? Longview is also on the opposite side of Kilgore and is a small/medium sized city.

I’ve always liked the Tyler area when I’ve gone there. It’s a significant upgrade over Baton Rouge. Learn Spanish.

Have family in the area. Land prices have gone through the roof in last 2 years. 7k an acre is common, 10k isn't unheard of. Lots of money ,imo, for sandy pines and scrub oaks. Deer hunting sucks. Fishing is good if willing to travel a bit. Good people. Colorado is within reasonable driving distance.

Buddy and his gf just moved there. He's an engineer for Trane and loves it there so far.

Doesn’t Don Henley (Eagles) own a bunch of land in that area ?

Never lived there, but spent time in the area, and know people around there. Longview/Kilgore is smaller than Tyler. Tyler isn’t big, but offers just about everything Baton Rouge does, minus LSU and the amount of crime.

Without kids, you have a few years before you need to worry about school districts, but the quality of schools can vary greatly from town to town in that area.

A lot of people from DFW are looking for land for a weekend escape or to retire. It’s an easy hour and a half drive on I-20 for the 7.5 million people of the Metroplex.

Was just in Tyler for a wedding. Wife and I drove around for the day and scoped the town.

Do it.

Solid place.

I have it as part of my work territory. I always enjoy going there

It’s 110k in the city limits so you have everything you need. Tons of restaurants and not far away from DFW and Shreveport.

My buddy is a city boy through and through and was a trial attorney in Dallas that married a girl from Tyler. He’s been there 6 years and said he’s never leaving.

Great golf area too
