Anyone here have Type II Diabetes?

I know I will probably get a lot of wisecracks, but this is a serious question. I was diagnosed three years ago, and it’s been a struggle for me ever since. I love to eat (main reason I got it in the first place) and I’ve struggled to change my eating habits. I take Metformin, but I know it’s not a magic pill. I also am very stubborn when it comes to exercise (also why I got it) so that also doesn’t help. I know about the scary complications that can arise, so I’m trying to avoid those.
So my question is, if any of you are diabetic, what advice what you give to help make it easier? Or if you have loved ones who have it, what did you learn from their experience with it?

If catching diabetes didn’t motivate you to eat better and exercise I don’t think anything else will.

If you come here for advice, ask yourself if you can take the sarcasm first. Now, seriously, you recognize you have problems, nut up and go get help. Fix it or just say frick it.

I am not diabetic but I have read where Keto has done wonders for diabetics

I've had it for around 5 years. The only change I've made was adding that one more pill to my drug cocktails at night/morning. Did the whole finger pricking thing for 6 months too. Don't let it define you. The pill makes things a lot easier. Stay away from most candy and walk a bit more.

Get the following book and stick to it with a religious zeal. The book is titled “Diabetes Solution” by Dr. Richard Bernstein.
I’ve been a Type 1 Diabetic for 36 years. My A1Cs run in the 4.7 range. You can do this, but it will take discipline.

Stop engorging yourself on sugar and carbs and then doing no exercise
Look at a picture of your kids before every meal and decide if that meal is worth more than watching those kids grow up

Diabetes can make your dick stop working. What other motivation do you need?
How old are you?

I don’t have it but my dad did and then lost bout 80lbs and doesn’t have it anymore. Seems to be the way to get rid of it is to get healthy and stay healthy.

Correct. It’s not a real problem. It’s a consequence of behavior.

Type 2 as of a few years ago. I’m going to assume you know the obvious ones (maintain a healthy weight, excercise, etc...). I’ll stick to non-obvious ones, or at least ones that aren’t a major life change (although hint: the major life change is more effective).
1) If your numbers are bad now, don’t hesitate to ask for insulin. I was on it for a week and it really helped me get a good “head start”. Insulin resistance goes up as blood sugar increases so you may be pissing into the wind if you’re sitting there in the 200’s all the time. It also can be hard/dangerous to excercise in that range so you’re kind’ enough stuck.
2) Intermittent fasting. This can be as simple as skipping breakfast. Use black coffee to suppress your appetite in the morning. It’s good for a number of reasons, but you also are giving your endocrine system some time to catch up and get a fresh start on the day.
3) Test, and keep testing, until you know exactly what affects you and why. Ask the doctor to prescribe the maximum amount of strips they can get away with and get the rest off Amazon (don’t buy over the counter).
4) Get cook books from various cultures, you can totally be a diabetic foodie. Especially experiment with spices, work your way into not using sugar for anything.
5) Carb replacements: cauliflower rice, doodles, etc....these work fine when you’re just using the carb as a juice/sauce sponge anyway.
6) go for a walk 45 minutes to 1 hour after a meal. If you’re not going to get much exercise, time the exercise you do get to where you can soak up some glucose. (Seriously, I’ve done this when I’ve been high after a meal and got it right back down into normal).
