I received one for Christmas as well. So far I've used it to:
- Turn lights on and off
- Play music
- Listen to books on Audible
- Kitchen timer
- Listened to Flash briefings related to my industry
- Check the weather forecast
- Check a sports score
- Had it read me a couple Wikipedia articles when I couldn't remember something
- Create a shopping list
Most of it is stuff I can do with Siri, but I've found the interaction much more intuitive and natural. I need to try to order/reorder something using Alexa.

Got a dot as well. Hooked it up to my Bluetooth speaker outside so if I'm grilling or going in and out, I can just say "Bitch, turn on bluetooth" or turn off. And then I have music through whichever speaker I'm near. Pretty sweet. Haven't done anything else with it.
Yea I renamed Alexa to Bitch.

In the post-Snowden era, I wonder who else is benefiting from you creating and allowing cataloging of your voice, IP and search tendencies?
ETA: Oh crap! I forgot to turn in my DNA swab to anCIAstry.com.

It's better than Siri. Just holler from the next room, "Alexa, set a timer for 20 minutes". Or "Alexa, when is the Citrus Bowl?"
No need to press a button. Just ask. And I find Alexa to be much smarter and a better "understander" than Siri.
You can live without it, but it's a decent toy to have around.

I dont know you, but if you have any sort of smart phone, then you already have a microphone inside your house. And anywhere you take it.
All samsung smart tvs do this as well. You're already fricked man.

I have an echo next to my bed for listening to music and to turn off my wemo bulb that is in the lamp. Other than that it doesn't get used. I bought a dot that is set up near the side door in the kitchen that I can turn off and on several lights around the house. My buddy has his dot in the kitchen for his wife to signal when dinner is ready, it flashes his basement/man cave lights on and off once or twice.
Amazon radio is very good, better than all but my longest running pandora station.

Got one for Christmas.
We have used it to
Control thermostat
Stream music, concur Prime Music is a great free streaming service
I was very impressed that it can easily stream from IHeartRadio when you want to listen to local radio
I will be buying a controller to allow echo to turn on our fireplace once I can figure out which controller has a "skill" in the Alexa ecosystem
I thought my garage door opener had Chamberlain's myQ tech as it was advertised on the box but it turned out to be an older generation smart controller from Assurelink. I now have to either buy the myQ controller or set up a raspberry Pi with some customized code not yet written.
News is great
Weather is great
I love the thing

At least my phone will sound like the inside of my pocket.
That's cute. Whenever you're ready, and you should probably be sitting down, pull out the recorder app, stick that phone in your pocket, and talk for a little bit. It's funny how much your pocket sounds just like you.
And when you freak, please share your reaction.
