Check out Freret Street Boxing Gym on O.C. Haley. Has a good mix of guys and gals just there for the workout and serious fighters. Also really close to downtown.

Frankie is just afraid I'm going to get hurt. He's trained a lot of promising boxers, but, perhaps one of his best was a guy by the name of Eddie "Scrap Iron" Dupris. Scrap had a long career and eventually passed his prime, and lost an eye during his 109th bout. Frankie has felt guilty since then, which may explain his reluctance to train me.

Thanks

I just moved from the CBD to the Irish channel. So OC Haley would be ideal, I could bike over pretty easily

Probably in his 70s. The gym has been around a looong time. It's called the Hit Pit

I've thought about doing it. I get bored with just running or doing the cardio machines at the gym. It would be a nice change up.

Its not for the faint of heart. It can be a pretty dangerous sport. I mean, anything can happen. All it takes is a cheap shot after the bell rings, hit your head on your stool, and your a frickin quadriplegic. Next thing you know your estranged family is scrapping for your money and you're begging your trainer to pull the plug on you.

Yeah I mean how could perfecting punching and counterpunching ever be useful in a fistfight
Yeah, that might work for 5 seconds max. Then, someone is gonna throw you on the ground and dig in your eyes while you're busy roping and doping air. Boxing and MMA are different than street fighting. They shouldn't be compared IMHO

Yes most bar fights might end up on the ground but a trained boxer could probably end it before it even gets to that point.

Unless you just want to go train at a boxing gym and be around a bunch of other boxers that are training to fight Golden Gloves or as pros, there is no real reason to join a boxing gym. Most boxing trainers are going to spend their time working with their fighters anyway so the amount of hands on stuff you may get will probably be casual at best.

You can probably You Tube boxing training stuff from some of the best trainers in the game like Kenny Weldon and get to where you at least know how to put on wraps, get in a proper stance/rhythm, and learn to throw various punches and combinations. For a cardio change up, that is really all you need and then get to where you can do a full boxing routine from rope work, shadow boxing, and if you want to spend that money you saved from going to a boxing gym, get a heavy bag and do bag work and maybe buy a speed bag.

I've been looking into the Kenner Boxing Club. It's all the way out in Kenner, but it might be what you need. The guy trains professional fighters (mostly comditioning and weight control prior to fights), but has a program for newbies. You can train w him and never fight or even spar if you would like.

Talked to a couple of the students and they enjoy it. Teaches boxing techniques, but you an take it at your own pace.

Because most people don't understand how to properly punch or have the accuracy to land punches in correct areas (chin as opposed to hard arse forehead).

Also, most people don't know how to move their feet and end up tied up with their opponent.
