It's not the size of dog in the fight, it's the size of fight in the dog. At 34, you'd better make sure that fight only lasts about 12 seconds

I boxed Golden Gloves before leaping over to jits/MT a long time ago but still box for the cardio, just don't spar. Highly recommend it for the cardio and unlike what some other poster thinks, for the self defense part of it. You could go to a straight up boxing gym but lots of jits schools have good stand-up guys coaching as well or you could get some of Kenny Weldon's CD's and get pretty damn salty learning at home.

this is another thing. Train myself to be able to breath is stressful situations. I've noticed before how I've held my breath and you aren't lying about being gassed in 12seconds when you do that

Yeah I mean how could perfecting punching and counterpunching ever be useful in a fistfight
Yeah, that might work for 5 seconds max. Then, someone is gonna throw you on the ground and dig in your eyes while you're busy roping and doping air. Boxing and MMA are different than street fighting. They shouldn't be compared IMHO

I guess it's not as easy to find a decent boxing gym these days. Have you considered Jiu Jitsu?

I tried it when I was a teenager. I couldn't take all of that roadwork.

I wonder how many people go up in those places looking to spar the first day and quit that afternoon

We really teach you how to get back on your feet the quickest way possible since about 99.9% of all street fights end up on the ground anyway.

street fights actually go much quicker than most people think. I would bet the avg street fight is under 30 seconds I'd imagine.

I have had a few go 3-5 minutes, and I usually ended up puking during or after. It also takes a couple of days to recover

I've had a couple go the distance.

Man once me and 2 friends were brawling with 4 guys at north gates. Seemed like it went on forever. My buddy came out of no where and crossed out the guys I was squared up with and about that time some ol Baw sneaks me. I end up pulling him to the ground with me and get on top of him but at this point I'm gassed. Too gassed to even ground and pound. So I get him in some kinda hold and finally tell him, 'look I'm going to let you up to get the f out of here but if you swing on me I'm going to beat the breaks off of you', totally knowing that I had no fight left in me. I let him up and they peel their Baw off the pavement and leave. I was sore for probably a week from that one.

I've been going for about a year. Been trying to get the trainer, an old cantankerous fella named Frankie Dunn, to train me but he keeps telling me I'm too old. I guess my persistence has paid because he's finally agreed to teach me the basics until I can find another manager.

That's called situational awareness and not being a dumb arse. Sadly, there are some things that we just can't teach.
