Anyone here familiar with Grand Rapids, Michigan?

Excellent job opportunity that I am seriously considering if the numbers work out. I have been told that mid and northern Michigan are gorgeous, but cold as frick (obviously). I will be flying out in a week to tour the area.

Visted there for a couple days one time as part of a larger Michigan trip. I really enjoyed it. I really want to go back. There is a cool downtown area and a bunch of good breweries. There is a minor league baseball team there and I think they get some decent concerts to their arena downtown.
ETA: It's also a short drive from there to the towns along Lake Michigan, which a pretty good spots in the summer.

Our Corp HQ is there.
The people I talk to there seem to love it. However, we do get a lot of folks moving South once they retire from MI and OH.

Cool city, pretty low key. Close the a lot of major cities. Autumn/Spring are so nice.
I have a good buddy whose family is from there and they love it. Nice golf courses, too.

I spent a month there during November for work. Beautiful place and about an hour from Lake Michigan. If you like to hunt there were deer and Canada geese everywhere.

Yep my whole family was born there. Just a quiet town kinda like the north shore.

A good friend of mine got transferred there 2 yrs ago. She couldn’t stand it. Said the few month of good weather was not enough to make up for the misery of the cold and snow. In Grand Rapids defense, last year’s winter was an extremely cold and snowy winter

very nice community. However, it gets brutal cold in winter with tons of snow. Hope you have 4 wheel drive.

Lived there for four years. Winters are very harsh. Grey and damp. Sun comes up late and goes down early when you can see it. That’s the bad part
If you can handle the 4 monthlong winters. The springs, summers, and falls are spectacular. The outdoor oppprtunities for camping and recreation are outstanding. The UP is beautiful.
We moved because we couldn’t handle the winters.
People are friendly and inviting. Taxes are high. I’ve heard from friends that real estate has gotten expensive lately. Good suburbs are Caledonia, Rockford, east Grand Rapids, Wyoming, ada. They have had good economics for several years and all areas work together to grow jobs.
If it wasn’t for the winters we would still be there.

The water is like bath water in the summer at around 60 degrees....
Yes in the summer its nice. 4 full seasons lots of bugs up in Michigan though

as subtly alluded to, Michigan is quickly becoming a Muslim stronghold. It's not as bad as Minnesota, but it's definitely on its way. Then there's the cold. A lot depends on how long you see yourself there.

Grand Rapids is a nice, cool town. If you can handle the weather, there are a lot worse places to live.

I know some people think the Dutch Reformed/Amway mafia culture is a bit weird. But, I love west Michigan, especially K-zoo.

Buy two pairs long underwear for trip.
Plan on snow. Dress shoes for interview. Boots otherwise.
Hat. Ideal: ELMER FUDD hunting HAT. For now, don't pretend you are hard arse. Cover head unless indoors.
You'll get used to it next year. Moving in winter is tough. Don't stint on weather gear.

The depths of lake Michigan is at 39 degrees in summer.
Its similar to lake Tahoe but you can't see across. Tahoe is worse.
