Very underrated place. Always something going on and you'll never get that "Big City" vibe like you would in Detroit, of course. Grand Valley State is right there, so you will get kind of "college town" vibe. Steelcase runs that area and do a lot for the community. Sports teams are all in Detroit and about 3 hours away. Only thing you have sports wise is the Grand Rapids Griffins hockey team. Mount Pleasant and Lansing are about an hour away each.

Grand Rapids is very different than most of Michigan. It is a right leaning city and it is one of the few big cities in Michigan with consistent population growth over the years.
Go to Traverse City in the summer and thank me later.
