Been there, done that, got the patch. It's all good until you meet some idiot in one of the hairpin turns driving an RV that he really has no idea how to drive.

The idiots that drive RVs over Independence Pass from/to Aspen make my head want to explode.

First, it's not the tail of the dragon. That is the small store across the street. It is somewhat acceptable to use the dragon for the road, but the best names to use for the road is us129, calderwood highway, or simply the gap.

I pretty much lived there the years I lived outside Knoxville. Love that place. Riding at night, early morning and late evening is the best for quick runs in the warm months. It's fun to go out on weekends and sit with Darryl aka killboy or one of the other photog's and watch the mayhem unfold. You get to see lots o titties in the summer, most of them bad though. In winter you can pretty much get the place to yourself no matter the time of day.

It use to be a cool road and still is somewhat but now it's too busy a lot of the time. You've got everything from 18 wheelers & RV's that are too long to make the turns without taking up the whole road to idiot crotch rocket adrenaline junkies with a death wish, to tourists in cages too busy looking at the pretty scenery to stay on their side of the road.

Fwiw, there is a road in Woodville similar to that one. It is on a road directly east of the jail. Takes 10-15 minutes to get to the bottom, but it is fun

The place has more cruiser wrecks than sportbike wrecks. Most fatalities are also cruisers, more injury wrecks are cruiser wrecks. You guys simply don't know how to ride, don't have a machine capable of it, or refuse to wear gear capable of preventing injury.

Lol at the gap

I like to go ride through Little River Canyon in north east Alabama. The scenery is breathtaking and you don't encounter the same sort of traffic you do on US 129. If you've never been I highly recommend it.

Who's these "you guys"? I've rode the dragon numerous times, always on a cruiser and never laid one down. Let's not act like crotch rocket jocks don't bite the dust on there. You know as well as I do no one type of biker has the market cornered on stupid. Just as many idiots ride the rice rockets as cruisers, touring bikes, or anything else out there.

A better judge of a biker is how long they've been riding. Cause you know as well as I do if you've made it for any length of time it's no accident. There is no such thing as a stupid "old" biker. .

The thing that is different about deals gap is it's lack of connecting roads. There is literally one in the 11 miles and it is a very lightly used unimproved one way road coming from Cades Cove. It's far enough away from cities where through traffic isn't too bad. The asphalt is smooth as silk for the most part and any trouble areas get cleaned by locals. It pretty much functions as a public track in the off hours when the cops go home and the tourists go back to their campsites and hotels.

Hit it up along with the Cherohala Skyway with a friend of mine. Conditions weren't great (it snowed a little on us on the Skyway) but that kept people away so it was nice.

I would prefer the Skyway if we could really put the throttle down in better conditions.

From somewhere in the area:

Oh the Florida straight line queens are some of the worst.

It's sad you even call yourself a rider when you refer to sportbikes as crotch rockets. That is a cager term.

There are a lot of stupid old bikers by the way. Have seen a ton that can barely manage to rumble up the parking lot of the gap without falling over. It's fun to watch them attempt to leave the store parking lot on Saturdays.

A better judge of a rider is their ability to ride and the mentality they take in their risk assessment.

Seen plenty who are idiots. But the type of bike they ride is not indicative of their skill or lack there of.

I've been a riding motorcycles since I was 14, I turned 44 today. I've road motorcycles from coast to coast over that time span and put probably over a million miles on two wheels over the years. I ride virtually daily for a little over 60 miles, and that's just if I only go to work and back. The term crotch rocket is used by every biker I've known over that time span. I've literally never heard anyone call them anything different.

Just because a old dude is on a bike does not mean he's been riding long. What I was talking about are bikers who have been riding 10, 20, 30 years. You don't last that long riding motorcycles unless you know what you're doing. The herd culls itself naturally.

Exactly, and a biker does not last long if he lacks ability.

Two highways I hear about from my biker friends which are popular in this area are the Million Dollar Highway (US 550) out of Ouray. I've ridden part of that one in a vehicle and it has some 1000 foot drop offs, narrow curves, and beautiful scenery.

The second is hwy 128 between Cisco and Moab, UT. I could definitely see why bikers like 128.

Been riding as long as you and I am 10 years younger. The term crotch rocket is not used by serious motorcyclists anywhere. It shows your ignorance on the subject.

This is just false and a generalization. I have seen idiots bringing their wives into MSF (taught them for a number of years) courses with 20-30 years of riding experience that can't even complete a simple figure 8 drill. I have been a track instructor and seen guys with less than one year experience do things I could never imagine doing myself. Seen guys with the same experience as us get run over by a left turning car and killed. Plenty of bikers do nothing more than go to the bar and claim what you are claiming. It's just laughable.

Back when I was an active member of S2Ki I remember the ridiculously large groups that would go out there and attend for the week, document and post to the site. I too always had it on my bucket list but it has grown so much since I first bought my car it seems it'd be more of a hassle to at best. Is that something you were a part of or did you make the trek on your own?

Don't get me wrong, I'm still one for spirited driving, but I prefer it in a more controlled environment like on a track or autocross.

You're right, what do I know, I've only been living in the biker world for over 30 fricking years. please tell me more so I can learn.

OK, whatever dude. Get your little girl panties out of your vagina and stop being a little overly sensitive bitch over what all the other bikers call your bike. Your opinion is all that matters and everyone else is just stupid.

I seriously doubt it now, I just don't believe you anymore since you can't even acknowledge the term for sportbikes is sportbikes. Crotch rockets would be like me referring to metrics as Harleys because they look the same.

I don't currently own a sportbike and I am not angry. However you seem to be having issues. I own an ADV bike, a dedicated trail bike, a trials bike, and a pit bike.
