Who is "unbiased" ? Anywhere in life? We all have opinions, based on our experience and observations. I do have a dog in the fight and it would hurt my children who are excelling in the magnet program, but I' am open and have ALWAYS been open for persuasion. Frankly, I think both sides make excellent points. I'd just never considered the flight into St George and I was complimenting him. He makes an excellent point.

I don't blame him if he likes his kid's school. It's much more honorable then all of these nattering neighbobs trying to scare people into continuing to pay for all of those community centers in br proper.

You think this is all just a Tempest in a teapot?
This won't work itself out for years regardless. But at this point most folks are complaining about whether or not these people should present a vote to the public. They "say" they aren't mad about that, but the 'lies" being told and by the individuals telling them.
It's just an effort to let people vote on their own future. That's it. The vote means a lot, but no election will be won or lost here on the OT. So yeah, it's a tempest in a teapot.

Well it's a long thread already. So many are obviously following it. The vote is likely going to be close. Some minds may be swayed on here.
So no it's not a tempest in a teapot. It's an interesting, timely and relevant topic of discussion.

I disagree.

Are you planning to vote for or against?
Posted on 2/27/14 at 8:58 pm to Pennymoney
I'm one of them who could be swayed. I live in what would become St. George. My husband is opposed and will vote no (if it comes to a vote). I'm just trying to read everything I can about it and see both sides before I decide. I follow these threads carefully.

Can't vote. So I want to sway the minds of anyone that can vote.
I live in BR and have a vested interest in what happens.

I'm pretty sure you don't. If you can't grasp the concept that as goes the City of BR so goes the "City of St. George".
Then you don"t get it at all.

I think after this people will start looking at the city parish form of gov't.
Right now we have 4 cities in EBRP.
Baker, Baton Rouge, Central, Zachary
Three cities Baker, Central, and Zachary get to elect their own Mayor and City Council.
Then at the end of the day those same citizens can elect the Mayor of Baton Rouge in the form of the City Parish Government Parish President/Mayor of Baton Rouge.
At the same time some unincorporated areas feel they are not getting represented properly. Alsen, Brownsfield, Deerford, Greenwell Springs, Pride, Port Hudson, and even Southern part of the parish. This is not recently its been brewing for years but this petition drive adding fuel to the fire. Alsen has one of the worst volunteer fire depts. due to money while they are surrounded by large industrial chemical plants which are inside the city of Baton Rouge. Seems like a money grab to me for years. If fair is fair they live in ground zero around some big industrial facilities and solid waste dump, but their community has no money come on.
*If we are going to be fair and unicorporated money stays outside of Baton Rouge why don't they have better services when they are in one of the richest parishes in the state?
*City of Baton Rouge money should stay inside Baton Rouge.
To me we need two governments
City of Baton Rouge Mayor and Council
East Baton Rouge Parish needs its own Police Jury with Parish President to represent the parish.
This would serve both parties fairly.
As far as schools we need to disband the EBRPSS. We could have Baton Rouge independent School District, southeast ISD, Southwest ISD, Northeast ISD, and Northwest ISD.
As far as people moving you will never stop that. People of all races that can afford to move to safer communities will.
If we don't watch out sooner or later developers will build shopping centers and movie theaters outside this parish which will take away from the tax base in East Baton Rouge Parish. Drive down major streets in Baton Rouge. Drive down major streets in Livingston, Ascension Parish, Zachary, and Central. Which areas are booming and it is not Florida Blvd East & Airline Hwy, Plank Road, and Greenwell Springs Road.

Unbiased was probably a bad term to use - based on my recollection of your post history it seemed to me that your mind was made up yet this post made it seem like you hadn't just to enhance his points. No worries

Ummm not it won't. It's in the middle of a massive revitalization right now. NORTH Baton ROuge is a shithole and always will be. Downtown, MId City, Goodwood, Nicholson, pretty much everything South of Florida blvd is on the rise and that means economically. And these morons want to hurt that to their own inevitable detriment.
Yep - work downtown and live in Baton Rouge city limits. People talk bad about BR on this website because it's apparently the cool thing to do, but it really does have a ton of momentum right now.

But South of FLorida and West of airline is.. Downtown is off the hook last 10 years. and IBM is coming. So is a train station and hopefully light rail to New Orleans.
Nicholson is going to explode with Water world Mixed developments and trolleys to LSU.
Goodwood Corporate area has Town Centre and it's always crowded. Mid CIty is on a major upswing.
ETA New Main library on Goodwood. Government Street Better Block project is a go and will be a major major upgrade for Mid City.

Town Center is not in the City of Baton Rouge.
They never incorporated the property.
If Baton Rouge sales tax is growing why are they trying to make a land grab for the casino, Mall of Louisiana, and Perkins Rowe?
When does a library raise sales taxes?
That is a government service which very little if any sales taxes are produced from it.
Where you drive down Airline Hwy in Prairieville look at all the small businesses coming up that sell items or services that produce sales taxes.
Seems to me they would not be worried about it if they felt secure in the tax base from the mall inside the city The Mall of Cortana.

Never said it was. Not the point. The point is the whole area is on the upswing from Florida Blvd on south. Instead of rotting and decaying as is being implied the central part of Baton Rouge is stronger than ever.
