State Sen. Mack "Bodi" White, R-Central, says he is pre-filing legislation today that would create four independent school districts in East Baton Rouge Parish, one of which would be the southeast district already created by the 2013 Legislature. As envisioned, the districts would remain under the umbrella of EBR Schools but would have their own deputy superintendents empowered to make a broad range of financial, administrative and educational decisions. The measure is intended to help reform a troubled school system and could, potentially, appease supporters of the city of St. George incorporation movement, though White says the bill is not about derailing the effort. "This is not about St. George," White says. "We have to fix education. We're going to get one shot at this in history. This is the time." That's interesting and maybe a nice compromise way out to make everyone happy. I look forward to more details later about the other three districts and how this impacts the entire system.
This also may be an advanced hint that Bodi realizes the odds of a SG incorporation or a SG independent school district happening are low.
ETA: Thanks for posting that info.

So basically what Superintendent Taylor proposed in late 2012, which didn't go very far? LINK

The SEBR School District movement has always been in favor of everyone having a more community-based school district. I've wondered if this would ever be put into motion. Glad to see Bodi is willing to work with everyone to try and do what is best for all of the students.

Do you think Bodi has the approval of Rainey and Browning to introduce this bill? I suspect he does but it would be a positive in my opinion if they are on board with this bill.

I think something is bound to happen with the schools. They wouldn't be building all those brown house neighborhoods out there for no reason.

I'm a known hater of Bodi White, but I can get behind this.
I think this is one of the proposals that EBRSS had as soon as deseg was overturned. Might feel sorry for Northeast when all is said and done.

At least they're no longer using the fire department to push this ballet initiative.
What part of this involves dancing now?

I'm a known hater of Bodi White, but I can get behind this.
For example, if the bill calls for each district being a separate taxing entity or with no EBRSS oversight of the spending, it's going to be a hard sell, IMO.
But maybe the EBR school board is just nervous enough about the SG petition and new district effort that they will be willing to compromise.
And maybe the SG organizers are coming to grips that their efforts might be futile so maybe they will be a little more flexible than they were in 2012/2013 when Taylor proposed his "four district" idea and they said it didn't go far enough so he dropped the idea.

I know both Lionel and Norm pretty well and I'm pretty sure they would approve of this happening. From my discussions with them, outside of the large town hall style meetings and off the record stuff, they are in favor of ISDs in general, not just their area. They think this is the best way to oversee the education of the city's future.
