I was in NYC 3 years ago for NYE. I went to times square on the 30th for 20 minutes after leaving a Broadway play.
It was fricking miserably packed....I couldn't imagine wanting to be stuck down there to see a ball drop

So I did it a few years ago but I had special circumstances.
My wife’s close friend was dating a guy from NYC whose father was 30 year NYPD. As a perk for relatives they will escort you through the barricades.
So around 10:30 we headed towards Times Square and walked through several barricades before we met the plain clothes guys that escorted us there. We were about 10 feet from Miley Cyrus.
It was an incredible experience.
However: you could not pay me enough to do it any other way. It is an absolute shitshow, and people who were there had been there since noon. And it is COLD. No way.

Not worth it, unless you have a hotel with a viewing area.
The 3 of them went to NYC for 10 days including Christmas and New Year's in a hotel overlooking Times Square. Even then they only got the sidewalks outside the hotel due to crowd size and the way security circulated the crowd.
As with most hyped events, it was more flash than substance. But they're glad to have done it...once.

I went to NYC for New Years with my fiancee last year with intentions of watching the ball drop. We decided to go with a friend to a club instead (cover in New York for a big event is retarded expensive but that's another story) because he told us there was no way we would want to do the ball drop. You get there early in the morning, get stuck in a pen, and have no bathroom. I heard it was miserable. The club was much better. Warm, did a countdown, not trashy.

I can't think of a more boring mass attended event. Totally contrived.

That's crazy...someone said people would wear diapers

It looks like one of the most miserable experiences someone could willingly put themselves in.

It sucks. You wait for a long time, then they clear it out for bomb detection, then you go back and wait even longer. People bring board games that take hours to finish and play more than once.
Better off buying a ticket to a club.

I was in New York for NYE about 8 years back. I figured I’d go down to Times Square and watch so I could tell people I’d seen that stupid ball drop. As I was walking down the street to find one of the prison pens the keep you in for 6 hours I passed an Italian restaurant and figured I should probably eat before getting stuck nut to butt with millions of other retards.
So I go eat at the bar and have a few drinks and the bartender then tells me I need to leave because it’s a busy night and they’re trying to get as many people in and out as possible. I said I’d give him $200 cash to stay at the bar until midnight and he agreed. So I sat and drank all night at the bar, met some cool people, paid $30 bucks for a pack of smokes from some random drunk on the street, then walked outside at 11:59 and watched the ball drop.

Carmine's?

I was there for the drop 12/31/1994.
Biggest waste of time ever. We took a train down from Albany and arrived at Penn Station (couple of blocks South of Times Square) around 3PM and people were already packing in. Roamed around and got dinner, came back at 7PM and the closest we could get was 3 blocks North. Decided still too early and came back at 10PM and were closer to Central Park than Times Square.
It is seriously one of the dumbest things to do. People seriously wait 10 hours for a 60 second ball drop
I have done the Macy Thanksgiving Day Parade as well and that is very much worth doing.

My wife and I stay at home to watch my balls drop.

Two years ago I was at Times Square to see the ball drop
was fun to see the confetti at the end, absolutely positively not worth standing for 12 straight hours without the opportunity to use the restroom and herded into a crowded pen like cattle.

My sister went. Said it’s disgusting. So many people wait out there for so long to get a spot they’ll literally piss/shite on the street
