Anyone Ever Go To NYC To See Ball Drop?

Eastcoasts New York snow thread got me thinking of a thread. I've never been myself to see it for New Years, but its always been on my bucket list. Of course some that live there say its not worth it, but some say it is. Share your story...Have you been...Are you going?

Not worth it, unless you have a hotel with a viewing area.

No, no one. Those are all actors and props.

Went two years ago
Throughly enjoyed NYC during holidays. Ball drop was cool but i wouldn’t camp out here all day for it. Luckily our hotel had a terrace you could see it from

I think it would, part of me just wants to go just so I could say I went. Of course these smart posters here are going to give me sound advice which no doubt will help.

I have been once. Seems like a gazillion people all around. It's just amazing to take in all of the sights of people, buildings, etc. When it's cold, I'm sure it sucks. It wasn't that bad when I was there, maybe 35 degrees at midnight.
you will see everything from the fanciest limos going up 5th Avenue to the trashiest of homeless crawling around Grand Central picking up stale half eaten donuts of the ground.

While it looks and sounds like a good time, I would assume Mardis Gras would beat it hands down and tied behind your back as far as fun goes.

You couldn’t pay me to go there during that time. I hate big crowds

yeah I think one of the things I'm going to have to deal with, will be huddled next to millions of people. I didn't think of having to pee. Damn
No doubt ill have a few beers.

Agree with Walt, when watching the crowd in NYC look cold as shite bunched up and no drinks I think how miserable, then they show a live feed in NOLA people with cocktails and lite winter gear I say now that looks fun

I’ve read that people actually wear diapers to pee in because it’s so crowded

Not worth it. Plenty of good parties in the city. They put you Like cattle into corrals with no drinking or bathrooms. It’s all for tv. Find a good bar like Legends and do that, trust me. If you leave to pee it will take you an hour to get back with zero alcohol in hand

Did it back in 2003. Glad I did it once but would not do it again.
We got out there around 2 and had a great spot close to the front. Then they started filling and closing the pens around 4 ot 5 and thousands of people suddenly appeared from all directions. It was crazy! As the pens were filled we kept getting pushed further and further back. We ended up nowhere close to where we started.
You get to know others in your pen very well as you spend hours shoulder to shoulder with them. It was warmish that year (in the 40s) and I was sweating being in that crowd for so long.
As for bathroom, they would let one person out at a time. No one else could leave until that person came back. My husband used the bathroom at Sbarro’s. Of course he had to buy something to use it but that was ok because we were hungry by then.
It is exciting when the countdown begins and when the ball drops you can’t even see through all the confetti coming down off the rooftops.
And that’s it. You hear Frank Sinatra sing New York, New York as you make your way back to your hotel. They don’t really let you hang out there too long after. We stayed 2 blocks off of Times Sq and we were in the room by 12:15.

That's crazy...someone said people would wear diapers. Makes since. Also sounds like it would be somewhere you went once, saying you went just so you could say so.

Good way to get arrested. Contrary to the TV shows, NYC is dry, Boss.

Went on first night of my honeymoon.
Glad we did.
Mardi Gras is much funner.
Peeing and getting a drink will not be happening if you’re on the street.
