Anyone else have colleagues/coworkers that insist on coming into work while sick?

I swear, we have two, TWO, fricking people coming to work. They're both wearing face masks, they probably have the flu. Why do people like this insist on coming in and risk getting the rest of us sick? Especially since this is work that can be done at home if it's necessary. Only reasons I can come up with are 1) to suck up to the partners/bosses by showing perseverance and 2) they want attention/sympathy.

I have the flu. I had to take an 8 hour nap after I went to a dr appt. I don’t know how they can have enough energy to work.

In a lot of jobs, people literally cant afford to take off of work for sick days.. only way around it would be some sort of federally-mandated sick leave pay, but we live in a country where a lot of employers wont even agree to provide maternity and paternity leave (outside of relatively short periods of time).. so good luck with that.

It should be illegally to knowingly carry a contagious disease that can cause a lot of harm to people and proceed to not take steps to quarantine yourself. The fact that someone would literally go broke by missing a week of work is not my problem when everyone's health is now at risk.

I think it depends on the workplace. Some bosses will fire your arse if you don't come into work 100% of the time. Not smart management but there are some out there.
If you ever worked for someone like that, it is hard to unlearn that behavior.

Especially these low wage jobs that have bullshite “point” systems where you can be fired for too many absences. The worst part of working a retail job for me was not the low pay but being treated like a third grader. I guess if they don’t though, people take advantage of the system.

I just moved into a corporate office from a field office. I’ve been sick for the last days and worked from home. We have letters all around the office that say go home if you feel sick. 90% of what we do can be done via Skype and Microsoft 365. We even have a vpn to login to servers.

I’m at a minute clinic right now to see if I have the flu. The next three days are the busiest I have in a long time. Trying to figure out how to muster the energy to get off the couch to do what I need to.
Hopefully if I am influenza positive I can get the treatment and rebound by morning. I slept 18 straight hours yesterday and today.

This. I work for a Fortune 500 company and they strongly imply that you shouldn't call in sick unless you need an ER visit or something. One VP came out and said that we're not children, so we don't need to call in sick for every little fever, cold etc... It's America's culture of put work before all else

I've worked for both types. About 4 years ago, I was chased out of the office with a broomstick by the top brass. I kid but he did tell me to get my arse home and not to come back until I was well.

Yes! I have to constantly remind them that sick time isn’t given as a reward to the employee. It’s there so you don’t get the whole office sick.
