I'd label a "small town" as anything under 10,000 and NOT considered a suburb of a larger city, nor within a few miles of one.
For example, Cottondale, Alabama may be considered a "small town", but it's right outside Tuscaloosa, therefore I would not consider that as a small town.

Further, I'd put the minimum of about a 30 minute drive to get to a decent size town that has all the trappings, like multiple restaurants, grocery stores, shopping areas, etc.

Thoughts like this is exactly what is wrong with this country.

I technically live in a city of 1,450 in the Western North Carolina mountains. That's what I think when I think small town. And there is one restaurant here that would put a lot of restaurants in NO to shame.

Don't have that problem if you own all the land around you as far as you can see.

I've got just over 20,000 in the county.

60 miles due north of ATL in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and on the edge of Lake Lanier.

We love it here.

I'm sure in 20 years we may want to keep pushing further out.
But right now, this is heaven

I can only think of two drawbacks of living in a small town:
1. No broadband and in this day and age that's a big negatory

2. Get bitten by a venomous snake, you're boned.

I didn't say it was the only good restaurant. I said that particular one was especially good.
