The rear seat only has a lap belt in my 78, not sure what the set up is in newer ones.

That's a common misconception.
Lots of testing of camrys vs old lead sleds for crash tests. In any collision, the Camry comes out better.
As for the OP, I like older 4x4s. Essentially anything from 1985 on. For the first time in 10 years, my current three are all from the 2000s. I have put over 100k miles on each of them in the last four years.
It takes a little getting used to. It helps if you are handy with a wrench. But it pays off. You get to drive something different than the norm.
We are taking the 3rd gen 4runner to Canada in about an hour. It has 210k on the dash and is in mechanically better than new condition. Appearance wise, dented rear bumper from a 2017 mustang getting a little to squirrelly, but a plate tire carrier should be delivered while we are gone.
I like the hobby.

Always thought the following concerning old cars.
Anitique is pre 1964
Classic is 1964 - to 1971
1972 to late 80's was junk, just because the car makers were having a tough time instituting plastics, emissions, and computers.
Also the bumpers were terrible in that time frame.
Early 90's really saw a great leap forward in styling and performance. Pretty much took customizing out.
New cars are badass due to safety and high performance.
Hopefully my 1979 Corvette will be hitting the road in the next 2 months.
Goat car for me is the 1932 Ford with a big caddy or nailhead motor.

'79 bronco 460, 4 speed,daily driver for now...yes i spend a lot on gas but i love it.
