The savings aren’t direct cost. The advantage of a shop with apartment is that after the shell is built, you can take your time doing the build out, whether you self perform or not. You can move into a travel trailer on or inside the shop during the build out.
I’ve been getting a lot of calls lately of suppliers trying to move inventory.
My question would be:
After Ida: I will take any tips or advice on what metal buildings survived.

Anyone built a barndominium?
I haven’t, but I love them and would love to have one.

the life expectancy of ground contact treated lumber is 10-40 years (60yrs max according to some reports), depending on the environment, concentration of preservatives, and depth of penetration (not to mention that treated 6x6s tend to twist as they dry). These things are going to be major problems for someone one day.
Use 8x8s not 6x6s
Have them treated CCA (the telephone pole stuff) not MCA....because MCA basically doesn't work.
Encase them in concrete footings 6 feet deep
Timbers will last a lifetime or more.

A new neighborhood opened up close to where I live and right now there are only 3 houses, a fourth is being built but one is a bardominium. I can go get you a picture of it later, I know the dude who lives in it. If I see him I can ask.

A cousin was way ahead of the barndo craze as he had one 15 years ago. Thing is, he already had the 4 bay shop, big enough for really large motorhomes, out in the country. He just built a really nice one bedroom apartment onto one end of it.
Some might not call it a barndo but I know it worked for me. May do one like that myself at some point.

I would like to just build the metal structure, get it approved as a “shop” and then build out the rest as I see fit.
Possibly considering container homes in the future if I can find the right piece of land.
Definitely the way to go.

My house came with a converted barn. Not sure how much it would cost to actually do it.

Depends on where you live.
$200/sq ft is a fair price.

I'm pricing one out in West Texas right now and they are running around $120-150 per sqft for living areas depending on finish out. Similar stick built is around $160 per sqft so only slightly cheaper but much more customizable and lower maintenance

So the wife can keep her donkey close by?
Should call it a condobarnium.

Wondering about cost differences compared to a normal home.
the one big hurdle i've personally heard is that most banks won't finance it as a mortgage. you'll have to go to an Ag/Farm Credit Union to get financing.

Living in a metal barn. Reach for the stars!

A buddy of mine built this bad boy recently... Only the front 1/3rd or so is his loft/living space.

Do you mean an actual barn with living quarters over the horse stalls or just a metal building with finished interior living space?

Just make sure your rough plumbing pipes are in the correct spot. Kitchen sink shares a wall with bath2. I knew going in I might change some critical dimensions of the build out so I stubbed drains strategically.
