Anyone been to Cuba yet?

You still can only go as part of these special tours that comply with the State Dept regs.

"classic" tour
Culinary tour
These seem kind of bullshitty to me, but you never know.

I saw it from my cruise ship window one time. Looked like a place for the poor and oppressed
My wife's dad grew up in Cuba. He's Lebanese, but his parents figured he should have a Spanish name. His name is Juan Carlos and he slicks his hair back with a sweet stash

Havana is a pretty awesome place if you stick to the nicer touristy parts. You can really tell the impact Capitalism made on the island before Castro took over. I bet it was one damn good time there when the mob ran things.

No but it's on my short list. I'd rather go without doing a tour though. Not sure when it will be open for everyone.

I've been invited by a friend to go, but I'm not big on pre-planned tours either. However, I think it could be 5-10 years before it's legit just totally open to go for whatever reason.

I have a friend who just got back. She spent three days in Havana and entered via Panama City but didn't get around to the rest of the island. She said Havana has a sort of shabby European old world feel to it like Athens or Naples....definitely run down but in a funky cool way.
Said that in general, locals were pretty cool...there isn't really any hostility towards Americans and people want more interaction and trade to get those $$$. Said its not really oppressive with overt anti-Americanism...its not North Korea....its poor compared to U.S. or Europe but not desperately third world poor as the Communist system at least ensured a minimum standard of living. Everyone has access to education and welfare...no one goes starving....and its pretty safe in Havana as well because of the Cuban security apparatus. I guess Communism worked on some level....
The tourist industry is already pretty evolved as Canadians and Europeans have been going there for years....problem is you still can't access the US banking system so everything has to paid with cash....and yeah they still drive old cars but that is really just in the tourist areas....they have European and Asian models on the road generally as those countries don't have any trade restrictions.

My daughter and son in law (from S LA)just left in May after spending a month docked in Hemingway Marina just west of Havana. They posted a blog online with lots of pics and write-ups of their travels on the island.
Got stopped by the US Coast Guard at 2 am in the Florida Straits on their journey there from Key West. Big Spot lights, blinking lights, sirens, voices over loud speakers giving instructions they were coming aboard, came all of a sudden out of nowhere. haha - scared holy sh%^&tsies out of them. Said they told the CC some BS story and were allowed to continue. Said the Island people were very friendly, and very poor.

I went on a 10 day dive trip/tour a few years back. We left out of Cancun and sailed across the Cancun straight to the west end of Cuba for several days of diving in the dragon's mouth. We then bused around the western part of Cuba, the tobacco growing region, for several days. I found this very interesting and informative as I had never been in a totally communist country before. It was a unique experience.
